Barbara O'Neal aka Barbara Samuel is one of my favorite authors; her Lady Luck's Map of Vegas is a classic.
When We Believed in Mermaids is very good, but a warning: if writing novels in present tense bothers you, this book is not for you. I think present tense is a tedious affectation, and it annoyed me all the way through the otherwise good read.

I loved this book. Wonderful story of a family who's life is changed when they see the long presumed dead sister on TV from New Zealand. We go back and learn the story of a dysfunctional family with two sisters and the boy who appeared out of nowhere to be taken in and loved by the family. This story tugged at my heart the whole way through.
