I thought this was a charming retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I don't think I've read any of Bradley's other books, so I agree with other reviewers that it was a little strange to have briefly hired staff with mysterious pasts that are never explained. It was also much steamier than I expected. Seeing Callie bring Ren back to life was a delight. I found her madcap family funny rather than irritating and plan to try the next book in the series.

I usually enjoy and look forward to Bradley's stories, but it was hard to finish this one. In fact, the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get. Why? One: Ren and Calliope didn't have enough relationship-building scenes. Ren spent too much time hiding and Callie dodged too many "accidents." However, their little time together was very nice--outside of the gratifyingly numerous sex scenes, that is. I really liked those. Two: Callie's utterly ridiculous family. Simply annoying. I couldn't like any of them, especially her youngest sibling as the reader finds out toward the end. Three: Too many secondary characters that hint at Ren's past that leave you guessing if you haven't read some of the earlier series. Simply frustrating. Or strange characters with questionable and secret backgrounds who simply "take charge" of your household. Beyond belief. Did I like any of the story? Well, yes. I liked Ren; he was so tragic and vulnerable at first that he appealed to my rescue tendencies. I was intrigued by his history and his fight back to the living, but there just wasn't enough of him overall. Callie was occasionally silly but I felt she was a good match for Ren as she put the life spark back into him. Overall, this story had lots of promise for me. Unfortunately the distractions didn't help to earn any more than 2.5 stars.

Why did I not realize this was Ren from the Liar's Club? Oh thank you for this book. I asked for it and I got it. I loved it, but I didn't care for the rest of the Worthington family. I doubt if I'll be reading any more of them.
