At first, I thought Patterson had finally lost it and decided to try his hand at science fiction. However, as I read further, this realistic-fictional story became a page turner rather quickly. The questions this story raised in my mind about the manipulation of human DNA to serve an evil purpose, not only made my skin crawl but forced me to bring this possibility to a conscious level for which I'd rather not. This story made me think while it kept me on the edge of my seat.

The novel moves away from the gritty Washington, D.C., setting of the Cross books and follows the daily life of Frannie O'Neill, a Colorado veterinarian. After the mysterious death of her husband several years before, Frannie retreated to an isolated life in her Colorado practice. But a series of bizarre events suddenly disrupts her lonely routine. On a personal level, she is shaken by her new tenant--Kit Harrison. Kit's too handsome and too friendly and he's a hunter (or so Frannie thinks). He's also recovering from a devastating personal tragedy, and, as Frannie eventually learns, he's really an FBI agent using his vacation to follow a crucial lead. But Kit isn't the one that's got Frannie concerned. WOW!!! I had this on my TBR for 2 years. I can't believe I waited so long!!! It blew me away within the first 2 chapters. It has very short, quick, intense chapters that keep you wanting to turn the pages. The story was awesom. Definitely one of my favorites.

I really enjoy James Patterson. This book held my interest throught out but I just could not get into the flying children. Everything else I really liked but it was just a little to far fetched for me. Even though this story could very well come to pass in the future. To me it was just a little to much. I would still say this was a very good story, book and I did enjoy it.

When The Wind Blows by James Patterson is a touching story about a group of children who are mistreated and misused for the benefit of another group of people. This group is using the children as test subjects by mutating cells of different animals and using host women to give birth to the children. These children are born mutated; some have wings, some have no faces, and some do not even survive. The ones that die, or are later "put to sleep" are stuffed away. One of the children in particular, Max, is a 12 year old girl with wings. She and her brother Matthew have taken the abuse from the horrible school for so many years, and are so fed up with it, that they decide to flee the school. This doesn't work to plan. On the other face of the story, a man named Tom Brennan, undercover for the FBI as Kit Harrison, is boarding an airplane to Colorado to investigate the recent news of several murders in and around the Bear Bluff, Colorado area that may possibly be linked. Behind the backs of his co-workers, Kit has been studying the talks of a corporation secretly trying to evolve humans by testing children, which is extremely illegal and distasteful in every way. Kit is told by his boss to go on vacation to Nantucket due to his diligent work ways, but he's actually off to investigate this case. Also there is Frannie O' Neal, a widow of Bear Bluff working as a veterinarian. Her husband, David, was killed a few years ago in a parking lot. The police never found a suspect or lead. She still wakes up sweating after having a dream of her trying to save her loved husband once again. These 3 characters will all meet in one way or another, which leads up to an epic ending full of laughter, surprise, suspense, and loads of entertainment. This book left me wanting more...in which I grabbed a copy of the sequel, The Lake House, to start reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has enjoyed a James Patterson book, or to anyone who enjoys suspenseful, murder mystery, and adventure type books.

This is a mystery thriller in which the two protagonists stumble upon a strange experiment of hybrid human bird-like children at a lab hidden in the mountains in Colorado. It is very fast-moving and action-packed. The sequel to this book is the Lake House.
Absolutely charming, along with a serious mystery involved. Different from most of Patterson's works, but a well worth read!

Excellent Patterson book. Lots of twists and turns. Characters were different from his normal stuff. I couldn't put this down -- read it in 3 days.
This was a quick, easy read with good characters. I gave it three stars. There are other books with Max in them and I may give them a try sometime.

This book is definitely NOT like James Patterson's other books. If you are looking for the typical Alex Cross detective novel, this is not for you. However, if you are looking for a mystery/science fiction novel that is more in the vein of Dean Koontz, you may enjoy this one.

Delightful entry into the books about flying kids. this one was the precursor and is what the author based his other stories on. It is not the official bk1 to the series. It is more like the budding of the idea for the later books. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though.

Very interesting different book about a mysterious group of scientist that are making children who have wings and are half human and half bird like who can live longer lives than humans. The story is mostly about a couple who has discovered what these people are doing and are trying to save the children and get the secret hospital unveiled so that all can see what horrible lengths these scientists are going to to can these human babies to do their experiments on.

This book was not Patterson's standard fare - the writing was awkward and hard to process at times, the dialogue wooden and un-realistic, the characters hard to understand or even like. The plot is hard to believe and hard to move forward at time, and overall not work my time.

When Dr. ONeil, a veterinarian in Rural Colorado, who has been widowed, meets an FBI agent, also a widower, pages start turning while they both begin to uncover leads in a diabolical and inhuman plot involving modern science and research, gene splicing, ect. that involves high ups in the medical, scientific, legal, and government fields.
There are magical ideas involved, which did not appeal to me as much as books with more "realistic" plots do. Patterson continues in his "page turner" manner, and breath taking twists. Some probable like this more than I did.
