Suspenseful page-turner set in Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Her first mystery, I believe. Thrilling, chilling! It kept my attention, even though I have read it many times before. Well-written, believable characters. I enjoy her older works the most. This mystery is about a woman who has fled her past, and an accusation of murdering her children, to start a new life in New England. She marries again, has two more children, and life is getting back to normal. Until she goes outside to fetch her children from their playtime one morning, only to discover they are missing.

"Where Are the Children?" was the first book I've ever read by Mary Higgins Clark, and I loved it! The characters, the plot, and the structure were developed well throughout the entire book. However, the male characters were almost too similar in characteristic, such as an undying loyalty for their female companions or a history of lost loved ones (i.e. Atty. Jonathan Knowles and Dr. Lendon Miles). Yet despite these identical characteristics & minor grammatical errors, this book was thoroughly enjoyable. The story's pacing was smooth, and the suspense was steadily drawn out until the very end. I hope to read more of this author's brilliant work.
I recommend this book to all adult readers, even those who are not usual fans of suspense novels.

This was the first MHC I ever read many years ago and I was hooked. I have read all her books since that time.

Great quick read.
Definitely hard to put down. A good story.
Good Read!
This book is definitely in the top 5 of her books that I have read.
This book is great because while you know what you're reading is fiction, it's one of those books that is entirely plausible so you can get lost in it. An innocent woman has two young children who die, so she changes her name and appearance and moves away. Now, w/ith a new life, she has two more children and suddenly, they are both missing and she's a suspect. This is definitely a suspense story!
Where Are the Children is one of my all time favorites. I have read this book numerous times. The suspense and intrigue is alive and well. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to experience a really great read.
What a great book! Mystery on Cape Cod. Its a fast read, and great beach book.
This was a very good book, very fast reading...
Another page turner.
excellant book
Mary Higgins Clark is always a great read
A classic - very very good!
Enjoyed!!
Oh my! This book was SO intense! I could not put it down. I stayed up late so I could finish it. I had never read anything from Mary Higgins Clark prior, I had judged her (by her name) to be a happy friendly read. I was really taken off guard and fear reading anything from her again! I was scared to find out what happend to the children but I just HAD to know so I couldn't put it down. If you like roller coaster reads then you will be in for a treat. I was freaked out! :D
Great book! Definately a page turner!
GREAT book a must read.
Nancy Harmon long ago fled the heartbreak of her first marriage, the macabre deaths of her two little children, and the shocking charges against her. She changed her name, dyed her hair, and left California for the windswept peace of Cape Cod. Now remarried, she has two more beloved shildren, and the terrible pain has begun to heal--until the morning when she looks in the backyard for her little boy and girl and finds only one red mitten. She know that the nightmare is beginning again...
I feel that this story was one of her best! Riveting and yet heartbreaking at times. A great read but beware if you have children. It can be a real eye-opener at times for Moms.
Excellent
Nancy Harmon fled the heartbreak of her first marriage, the macabre deaths of her two little children and the shocking charges filed against her. Now married again, with two more children, the terrible pain had begun to heal..until the morning she looked in her backyard for her little boy and girl, found only one red mitten and knew the nightmare was beginning all over again.
Great Book!!I read it in 2 days.(Which is Quick for me!)
Her first and her very best! I have read this book several times. If I am disappointed in one of her new releases, I can go back and reread this one and remember what I love about Higgins Clark's writings.
page turner
The first one of her's I ever read, many years ago. A great book! It has kept me reading every book she has ever written!
Nancy Harmon fled town after the deaths of Her two Children, and the hideous charges against Her. She remarried and had two more Children, She was happy untill She looked for Her Children And found only one tattered red mitten, and knew the nightmare was beginning again........
The jaws of horror were closing on her again - and this time there was no escape.
Nancy Harmon had fled the evil of her first marriage, the macabre deaths of her two little children, the hideous charges against her. She changed her name, dyed her hair, moved from California to New England. Now she was married again, had had two more lovely children, and her life was filled with happiness...until the morning when she looked for her children and found only one tattered red mitten and knew that the nightmare was beginning again...

I'd really hoped to just love this book and then become obsessed with reading everything else by Mary Higgins Clark (this was her first book). But, unfortunately, it was "just okay". The mystery was perfectly good and the characters were all likeable (or unlikeable!) and well-drawn. But there were just too many of them. Every new clue brought in another minor character. And another, and another. I kept wishing it would all just get back to the heroine's experience. It read sort of like an old movie of the week on tv. I was pleased the book was a short one. I would recommend it for fans of light weight mysteries.

Excellent story. I can't believe this was written almost 4 decades ago. Couldn't put it down.
Loved every second of it!
While some parts were exciting, most of this story was seriously lacking. I usually love farfetched stories but not this one.
I found the suspense thin and the plot predicatable. Not her best
My second reading; I wanted to reread after I read Mary Higgins Clark's biography and learned this was her first book. I get mixed up on names with this author; so taking notes is important.
Suspense and terror as only Higgins Clark can do it! The characters are true to life, they could live next door, and the plot is full of twists that keep you reading all night.
Very good story!
Really good suspense. I was completely caught up in the story.
No idea what this book is about, I read it a long time ago, however if you really like mystery then Mary Higgins CLark is the boom!
very good read
My first MHC, loved it, great story line. a good fast read. hope you enjoy it too.
This may be the first Mary Higgins Clark novel and I think it's one of her best. The suspense is incredible and you'll turn the pages as fast as you can to follow the story of a mother desperate to find and bring home her two kidnapped children. In my opinion Ms. Clark's more recent books are not as gritty as her first efforts which are rich in atmosphere and edge-of-your-seat terror. If you haven't read Where Are the Children, you're in for a treat. If you read it once, read it again.
Nancy moves away and tries to start a new life anfter her children die and her marriage ends. She seems to be happy until "it" starts all over again when her children become missing.
fantastic went fast.
A great winner. A great thriller. Will keep you on suspense. And will keep you guessing on who the real bad guy is.
Nancy Harmon had fled the heartbreak of her first marriage, the macabre deaths of her two little children, the hostile front-page newspaper stories and the shocking charges against her. She changed her name, dyed her red hair sable brown, and left California for the wind-swept peace of Cape Cod. Now she was married again, had two more beloved children, and the terrible pain had begun to heal...until the morning when she looked in the backyard for her little boy and girl, found only one red mitten, and knew that the nightmare was beginning again....
