Book #1 in the Sowers Trilogy. Great story -- very intense.
WARNING - do not read without a box of kleenex handy.
This is a remarkable story of two young Russians who lose their parents to Stalin's Soviet State in 1930 and must endure this dark and periolus time alone. Yuri Letinov, a brave lad, stays in Russia and stands against the terrible oppression of the communists. He forces his sister, beautiful and spirited Tatyana, to sail to American to avoid the gathering danger. They have no family and no home -- but they do have faith in the Lord's gracious providence.
Be sure to read book #2 in the series, In Fields of Freedom.
