Great book. This is the one where we really start seeing the developing relationship between Hero Jarvis & Lord Sebastian. Wonderful character exposition. Other authors should take a lesson from C.S. Harris on "showing instead of telling" the reader what makes the characters tick. I like the way all the books in this series move between the different worlds of Regency England, from the dregs, to the middle class, to the elite who are running the country.

This series just keeps on getting better and better. I hope C.S.Harris keeps writing. I really am becoming more attached to Sebastian. This book showed a more vulnerable side to him and he needed some of his edges softened. I can actually feel and smell and see London of 1812. The research is excellent and her grasp of history is well woven into the story. Highly recommend. Number four is almost a stand alone book, but you really need to at least read book three before this one. Of course I recommend you start at the very beginning, but whatever you decided, just start. You will enjoy, honest.

THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK I HAVE READ BY THIS AUTHOR AND I REALLY ENJOYED IT. IT IS SET
AROUND 1812 AND THE COUPLE WHO ARE THE MAIN PLAYERS ARE ANYTHING BUT BEST FRIENDS. MURDER SEEMS TO BE EVERYWHERE AND ESPECIALLY IN THE BROTHELS.
THE STORY MOVES QUICKLY AND ALLIANCES SHIFT CONTINOUSLY DURING THE STORY. A YOUNG WOMSM OF MEANS IS MURDERED IN A RESCUE HOME FOR THOSE RUNNING FROM THE STREET-THE QUESTION TO ANSWER IS "WHY WAS SHE THERE?"

The savage murder of eight prostitutes at a London house of refuge provides Sebastian St. Cyr with yet another challenging puzzle. Hero Jarvis, the fearless and independent daughter of his mortal enemy asks St. Cyr's help in tracking down those responsible. The amateur detective finds no shortage of suspects, ranging from the pimp of some of the dead girls to Bow Street magistrate Sir William Hadley, who had patronized them.
There are a lot of action in Harris' books which keeps the plot moving and makes for a fast-paced read. I like how we get a look at all classes of society from the Regency era and how they affect the storyline. I'm interested in reading the next book in the series to find out more about the relationship of Hero and Sebastian. I would recommend this series to those who love historical mystery.
