Young for his age, Porter Jr.,leaves his rural Georgia home in 1838 to meet the world at Willingham University, armed with the knowledge that he has been "Raised Right" in the best Baptist tradition. What happens over the next four years will challenge the things he holds infallible: his faith, his heritage, and his parents' omniscience. As we follow Porter's college career, full of outrageous pranks and ribald humor, we sense a quiet, constant flowtowards maturity. Peppered with memorable characters and resonant with detail of time and place. The Whisper of the River is filled with the richness of spirit that makes great fiction.

In this book Porter Osborn our hero from Sams' earlier book Run with the Horsemen leaves his rural Georgia home to go to college. This deals with his exploits at college and runs into things that challenge his faith and things he was taught growing up. All these life lessons are mixed in with the many exploits of a young man in college. Full of humor and touching moments. Another book that is hard to put down but definitely a classic.

I was required to read this book before starting college. The author is a graduate of the college I attended. Wonderful book. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Interesting coming of age story. Some of the situations defy reality; not this many adventures could happen to one person. The final episode that brings the boy to reality and life is believable, as some of the earlier episodes are not.
