No one tells a mystery quite like Joy Fielding.... just when you think you know what's going on, she shows you that you haven't got a clue. This was an excellent read.

The characterization and plot line are fantastic and will you be surprised at the end! I never expected the outcome to be what it was. This "oh so predictable novel" turned into a "Oh My, I NEVER saw that coming." I can usually figure out the endings to mysteries, but this one had me completely fooled.

Since Terry Painter's mother died five years before, the single 40-year-old nurse has been renting out the cottage behind her Florida home. When an appealing young woman calling herself Alison Simms arrives from out of town, Terry offers her not only the cottage but also her friendship. Alison pries into Terry's personal belongings, brings home rude young men, tells lies about her job and family and pops up everywhere unexpectedly and uninvited, while Terry's inner critic, in a voice sounding much like her mother's, fuels her suspicions. Threatening phone calls from a man who seems to know a lot about Terry and the tenant who occupied the cottage before Alison add to her growing paranoia. Despite these worries, Terry finds time to get involved with the son of one of her patients, an elderly woman named Myra. Careless, friendly Alison and responsible, guarded Terry are a study in contrasts, but as the novel progresses, Fielding makes it clear that they both have secrets to hide. brutal

Terry Painter enjoys her quiet life in tranquil Delray, Florida, where the single, forty-year-old nurse lives alone in the house she inherited from her mother. When young, vibrant Alison Simms rents the cottage on her property, the two women strike up a fast friendship - and Terry is swept into a fantastic new life: dinners out, shopping, makeovers, even flirting with the handsome son of one of her elderly patients. But nothing about her newfound companion is as it appears, as Terry discovers when Alison's closely guarded past comes to light. Now Terry is locked into a race to reclaim her own life - before she opens her door any further to the stranger she thought she knew...

I have to say, I loved this book. It seemed very predicatable most of the way through, and I got a bit bored, but then there was a completely unexpected twist at the end that changed my opinion of the book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good thriller with a twist ending!

Summary
From the New York Times bestselling author of Grand Avenue and The First Time comes a chilling story about a woman whose tranquil life is turned upside down when a mysterious stranger moves into her neighbourhood. Terry Painter lives a quiet life in picturesque Delray, Florida. Forty, single, and a nurse at a home for the elderly and the disabled, she enjoys a solitary existence in the cosy house she inherited from her mother five years ago. Terry's tranquil life changes quickly, however, when young, vibrant Alison Simms rents the cottage behind her house. Upon their first meeting, Alison blows into Terry's life like a tropical storm, bringing with her friendship, excitement, and a group of colourful acquaintances. But after the first euphoric wave has settled, Terry finds herself trapped in the drama of Alison's dark past and the whispers and lies that fuel it.

WHISPERS AND LIES is an exciting suspense thriller that never lets up until the final twist occurs. The story line is fast-paced as the audience observes Terry becoming increasingly paranoid over Alison and her friends, but fans will wonder if the distrust and anxiety is valid or crazy. Genre fans will want to read Joy Fielding's latest novel told from the perspective of Terry, but make sure not to have any company for a few days.

Entertaining mystery/part-thriller with a shocking twist to the last quarter of the story. Totally unexpected and definitely not a conclusion usually found in a mystery. This is a good, unique story!

I haven't been disappointed with any of Joy Fielding's books and this one is no exception. I didn't know where the story was going and when the truth came out I was totally shocked--good fast reading.

I was sure I had read this mystery before, but I started to reread it anyway. Boy, was I wrong! Joy Fielding is good at writing suspense, but the ending of this one was a complete shocker! Never married nurse Terry Painter lives a quiet life in Delray Beach, FL. She takes in a tenant for the small cottage behind her house and her life changes radically in the aftermath. Allison Simms is a younger, flighty, friendly stranger who wants to share a friendship with the somewhat lonely Terry. She starts intruding into Terry's well-ordered life, and demands a lot of attention. What is her real intent? Is she who she really says she is?

Kudos to this author for this book! I don't want to give away any of the storyline but I will say that this book had me leading in the direction of where this type of novel should lead and then - suddenly - there's a whole different side to our 'damsel in distress'. And even learning that truth towards the end of the book, I still found myself turning pages as fast as I could read them to find out what happened in the end! Best read I've had in a while!

I found this at yard sale for the Humane Society but will never get around to reading it.

Blurbage courtesy of Amazon.com:
An ending worthy of Hitchcock rewards readers able to weather the false clues and emotional angst of Fielding's latest page-turner. Once again, the bestselling author (Grand Avenue; The First Time; Missing Pieces; etc.) tests the complex ties that bind friends and family, and keeps readers wondering when those same ties might turn deadly. The brutal denouement will shake readers lulled by the tale's cozy trappings, but those familiar with Patricia Highsmith's particular brand of sinister storytelling will recognize the mayhem Fielding so cunningly unleashes.
