I enjoyed this book nearly as much as the first two in the series, however the treatment of women by the primary character left me cold. I'm know mysogyny when I see it.

Great Mccaffrey
On the planet of Pern, a small white dragon and his rider prove their value as destroyers of Threadfire.
One of my top favorites of the Pern novels.
Never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed between the daring and adventurous young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary white dragon, Ruth. Pure white and incredibly agile, Ruth was a dragon of many talents, though almost everyone on Pern thought he was a runt that would never amount to anything.
But Jaxom knew better, knew he could teach his dragon to fly and to destroy the deadly silver Threads that fell from the sky. Disobeying all rules, Jaxom and Ruth trained in secret. Their illicit flights seemed but a minor disobedience--until they found themselves in the path of danger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all!

I really enjoyed this book. I would have given it 5 stars if sometimes I didn't become annoyed with the main character. It was good to see the interaction of many main characters I'd come to know thus far. This book moved the history of Pern forward in a fun, not sad, manner. Good writing.
This was my favorite of the Pern series as a boy. I bought it because I was enchanted by the cover, and started reading it only to discover that it was part of a series. So I went back and read the original two books before resuming this one. This was definitely my favorite, and I think that even now, many years later, this book still is one of my favorite books from any genre.
3rd in the classic dragon series.
According to an "official" guide, this book is #5 of 16. Though, read the first two chapters of this, then book 6, then back to the remainder of book 6.

The little dragon of this book is fun. I wish he got more "screen time" and the humans less!
Anne McCaffrey is one of my favorite sci-fi writters. Her Dragonriders series is one of my favorites.

I love the Pern Series. I have been reading it since I was a pre-teen. And I still go back and re-read it over and over.
Very well loved book :)

There are some books you read as a teen and they just don't hold up that well as an adult. Sadly this is one of them for me. The best character in this book is Ruth. Jaxom is something of a jerk, frankly - the whole bit playing lord of the manor, practically raping the village girl and then dropping her without a word grated on me in a way it didn't do back in the 70s. The feudal caste system here seems more unpleasant than not, nice if you're a lord I suppose. McCaffrey did create an interesting world though, and this book advances the story quite a ways. I know she continues the discovery subplot in other books, and I'll probably read them again too.
My favorite of the Pern series!
AS FANTASY GOES, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ONES THAT I HAVE READ. I ENJOYED IT, AND HOPE FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO READ AND ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS I DID. VJ
