I finished the prior book in the Charlie Parker series, The Killing Kind, a few days ago and jumped immediately into this one. In a way, this was a sequel to Killing Kind with some of the loose ends tied up in this book. Overall, it was another great thriller and I'm really becoming a big fan of this series. In this one, Parker is talked into traveling to South Carolina to investigate the alleged rape and murder of a young white woman by her black boyfriend. An old friend of Parker's, Elliot Norton, convinces him to investigate which leads Parker into a real nightmare of events that stem from what happened in the swamps of South Carolina years before. Meanwhile, Parker's girlfriend, Rachel, is pregnant and could be at peril back in Maine if the Reverend Faulkner from the last book is released from prison.

This was a real page-turner which I had a hard time putting down. One of the bonuses of this book is that it tells the backstories of both Angel and Louis, Parker's trusted friends, which were both rather poignant. Angel and Louis also had a rather large role in this one which included getting vengeance on some despicable rednecks who were instrumental in the death of an innocent black man years before. Another high recommendation for this series and I'm anxious to continue with the next one, The Black Angel. I've now read five of the books so I believe I have another fifteen to go. Should keep me reading for a while!
