When a man who supposedly died years ago is found murdered, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is intrigued enough to look into his death. Nicholas Hayes, the third son of the Earl of Seaford, was sent to Botany Bay for life after his conviction for murdering a beautiful young French woman. Is there more to the man's death, his life, and his conviction than the public knows? Why risk coming back when he can be arrested again?

So who was Hayes? Disowned by his father, forbidden to marry the woman he loves, as an impetuous hot headed young man he rushes to right wrongs that mire him ever deeper in trouble. As more is uncovered, Devlin identifies with a man who may have been wrongly accused of acts he didn't commit. (Devlin once faced similar accusations.)

The plot is complex and as the truth comes to light more people die. Uncovering secrets, he finds four upstanding men have reason to kill Hayes, but which one actually did? The story unfolds with Hero, his wife, helping locate the elusive child and determine who the man really was. Hayes had friends who believe in his innocence but soon even Hero and Devlin are threatened. They manage to escape those who want to halt their meddling in a violent way.

The author has created a fascinating mystery with two of my favorite sleuths as key characters. Courageous, determined and thorough, they continue investigations no matter who may involved and at what level of England's society or government. Recommended for those who want another intriguing and suspenseful story featuring Devlin and Hero.

1814 London 15th book in series but can be read as standalone. Sebastian St Cyr & his wife, Hero, are asked to solve the murder of Nicholas Hayes who was accused of murdering a French woman 15 years earlier. I learned lots of well-researched history about the East India Co and their opium smuggling & Napoleonâs defeat. Harris is a very talented writer. Her unique characters & plot make for a book that held my attention all the way through. I now look forward to reading the next book in the series and would highly recommend to those who love historical mysteries. Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publisher for a free copy for an honest review.
