A marvelous book that pulls you right into the story! As usual, when I have a book that I absolutely love, I'm having a difficult time finding the right words to say about this book. It's an emotional read and you just get carried along with every part of the story. It starts when a newly married Maine boatbuilder gets his WWII draft notice. His twin brother tries to talk him into trading places with him and that is the start of this story that carries over two more generations.
The story isn't just about the main characters but about this small town in Maine where the primary employment is lobstering. It's a story about love, loss, loyal friendships and family relationships. One of the best books I have read.

Oh ... this book has my heart! The writing is so lovely, I often felt like I was reading a piece of literary fiction, and certainly not a debut. The characters are fully formed and interesting, the sense of place just oozes from the pages, and there's a part of the plot for every reader - mystery, adventure, romance, patriotism ... sigh. Do yourself a favor and add this title to your TBR list and watch for the author's next novel - I know I am.
This book surprised me. I hoped for a good story but was drawn into a wonderfully deep and complex tale of the human condition plus a stark reminder of where our true hope comes from. 4 1/2 Stars - Full review is at my website.
