I really enjoyed "Wife for Hire". It was entertaining and sweet. The protagonists are likable and it's fun to watch them navigate through the charmingly absurd circumstances that are signature Evanovich. If you're in the mood for something light, fun, and romantic--this book would be an excellent choice

Re-release issue Nov 2007. Cute story. Maggie can't wait to get out of her hometown, where she has always been different and talked about. Only she runs right to another small town with all of the same "problems". It is her relationship with Hank that finally makes her understand that everyone has to face their problems, and running away isn't the answer.

It was a light and fast read. I like this author in general, and this book displayed the humor I have come to appreciate from her. Lots of surprises, and the housekeeper rocks. I loved the family dynamics and the people in the town were WONDERFULLY written. I really recommend this book if you're looking for something fun, a little silly, but will leave you with warm fuzzies and a smile.

Usual Janet Evanovich "cute". Not as good as her Plum series. Weak ending. I was a little disappointed in this one.

Original released in 1990 and released in 11/2007... As usual with Janet Evanovich's books, this one had me laughing out loud. I don't find many things funny, however when it's a book by Evanovich it tickles my funny bone.
Hank decides he needs to hire a wife so he can get the bank to loan him money.... Little did he know he was getting more then he bargained for when he hired Maggie.....

I cant believe I read the whole thing! This book is definitely LIGHT reading; you wont even need to engage your mind!

Its typical Evanovich (which is a good thing), without the plot (which starts to show after awhile). Both of the 2 main characters are adorable and over-the-top-gorgeous/handsome (of course).

Hank Mallone hires Maggie Toone to play his wife so he can appear stable enough to get a loan. He needs a loan from the towns banker his father. Hank has sowed heaps of wild oats in his not-too-distant past and needs to prove his maturity to the town and himself.

To that end, he planted 120 acres of apple trees and hes harvesting scads of apples. Now, Hank needs the money to move to the next level of business. Since it takes a few years from planting to gathering, and hes already a success, I dont see the problem with his father. A sound business plan is what will impress a banker, not a new wife. Maybe Im over-critical -- expecting a logical plot.

There is no build-up; suddenly in a single day, Hank decides hes in love with Maggie. OK so far? Maggie really likes Hank, and we havent finished the fourth chapter!

The part I really did like was the almost constantly funny dialogue. Housekeeper Elsie Hawkins and the two pets added to the mayhem.
Oddly enough, there was a moral to the story. The person on the receiving end of the learning was Maggie not Hank.

Summary: This is a great book if you like high-octane humor unencumbered with too much plot (that might confuse things). A very quick read.

a very cute book about hank who is trying to get a business loan, but keeps getting rejected because he isn't married. and about maggie who wants to get away from her life and write a book. maggie decides to take the job as hank's wife for 6 months. things don't turn out the way they expected to, and it will be harder to say good bye then they both thought.

The storyline in this book moved way too fast. Yes, people can fall in love and get married quickly (I should know,I met and married my hubby after knowing him only 5 months... and it's been 13 years and we're still happily together, but I digress). TMy problem with this book is that the plot seems too hurried. It has great potential, but it's too hurried, some characters are a little too off the top and quite honestly, I wasn't impressed. I would just stick to the Stephanie Plum series.

Another great read for Janet - these earlier books of hers are more on the romance, sappy side of things but still a very good read. I really enjoyed this book - I seemed to relate to the storyline a bit, so it made reading it very fast! :p

Another of Evnovich's early (pre-Plum) romances, this one involving a would-be writer who agrees to pose as the wife of a hunky young orchardist so he can qualify for a loan. Guess where they end up? (Oh, you peeked1)

I thought this was one of the better non-Plum books. It has the usual surly older lady and the hot guy and hotter sex. It was entertaining.

I know these books are just short little throw-away romances, but the characters -- especially the secondary characters -- just aren't believable.

Cute little story line ... some surprise when the truth about the diary's value was revealed.

Somewhat reminiscent of Janet's earlier Stephanie Plum 'who done its.'

Plot is quick and easy-man hires fake wife, they are attracted to each other, a little mystery going on and they fall in love.
She is a flake and works on getting it together and he seems nice and steady. Easy read and easy story to keep track of.

This is a fun one day read. The characters are quirky and the story, like most romance books, is a little unbelievable but still cute and worth reading if you like Evanovich.

Janet is one of the few writers that were good from the start and still is, she writes about boy/girl feelings without going into all the sex and romance that others write about and lose my interst in their writing.

Hank Mallone spotted trouble when she sat down and said she'd marry him. Maggie Toone was a tempting firecracker who'd make his life delightful hell if he let her pretend to be his wife in order to improve his rogue's reputation. Would his harebrained scheme to get a bank loan for his business backfire once Maggie arrived in his small Vermont town and let gossips take a look?

Maggie never expected her employer to be drop-dead handsome, or to affect her like a belt of bourbon on an empty stomach, but she was too intrigued by his offer to say no... and too eager to escape a life that made her feel trapped. The deal was strictly business, both agreed, until Hank turned out to be every fantasy she's ever had.

This book had be laughing non-stop. The only thing that could have made it better was if it the book had been a bit bigger.

Grandma has found a bag of money and decides to buy an RV and hit the open road but only makes it as far as Atlantic City before Stephanie, Lula, and Connie catch up with her. Also hunting Stephanie is a leprechaun who wants the money. Diesel from the previous two Between the Numbers book is also back and does his usual good job of teasing and flirting with Stephanie. Throw in a mobster who also wants the money and everything that can go wrong does.

The book is a fun quick read and gets five out of five stars from me!
