Adorable story--MUCH better than the movie, and great for adults, not just a kids' book.
I loved it. It's a kid's book that grown ups will love too.

Great book about friendship, reaching out to others, and the power of pets in bringing people together!
A thoroughly charming book that runs through all your emotions. I loved it!
EXCELLENT children's book.
really a great book, especially for 9-11 year olds. One of my all time favorites along with charlottes web and where the red fern grows
cute story of a dog found and what he brings to a sad family.
A must read!!
Great story..everyone must read this book
A time gone by and excellently recalled by the author. Innocence, unconditional love staunchly upheld between a child and pet - no other relationship comes close.
If your child is between the ages of 8-12 it's the perfect read. My duaghter enjoyed the characters and their settings. I would highly recommend and a bonus would be to compliment it with a showing of the movie after.

I loved this story. My son had to read it in the 4th or 5th grade, so I read it also. Very endearing story of a young girl in Florida, living with her dad, and her adopted dog.
Adorable story about friendship in the not so expecting places. Great story for kids before bed! :)
Wonderful, sweet and lovable. This book exceeded my expectations and is one of my all-time favorites! (I know it's supposed to be a children's book, and my 6 & 7-year-olds loved it too) but it's just so endearing.
This was an amazing book for me to read. I saw the movie and was intrigued, so I wanted to read the book. It is beautifully well-written, and I would love to know someone else gets to enjoy it.(:
Excellent book for young people to read.
Great kids book! My boys loved it.
Better book than movie, and I liked the movie!
This book was fun to read. The story was unique.
Kate Dicamillo does a wonderful job in this book, and completely meets the standards she has set within her other books.
Because of Winn-Dixie does in no way fail to be exciting, fun to read, or interesting for adults, young adults, and children. Wonderful book for children to begin reading chapter books with, and also great to read to children at bedtime. They'll fall completely in love with Winn-Dixie, and her human India Opal.
I loved this book at 17, my younger brother enjoyed this book at 12, my little sister adored it at 6, and my mother thought it was fabulous (but I'll keep her age secret!).
This book is the entire reason we purchased more of Dicamillo's books, and would've sooner if we would've known they were so great! I'd recommend to any animal lovers, or people who enjoy a good story of friendship and loyalty.

My 9 year old daugther loved this book! She loved how Winn-Dixie could read India's mind. It kept her in suspense all the way to the end.
This is an endearing book that is a pleasure to read for children and adults alike.
I, for some reason have never seen the movie (not much of a tv person) so I listened to it on my travels to work. It's the story of a preacher's daughter and how Winn-Dixie and her met up as well as all of their adventures.(I don't want to give too much of the story away). It's a cute story and I enjoyed it and I'm sure you will too especially if you love dogs.
this was a wonderful book my daughter read in the 5th grade. she loved it because she loves dogs and it warmed her heart to see how this dog could change the life a little girl so much. Then when the movie came out she just had to read the book again after seeing the movie.
i received 20 of these books to give each child in a 2nd grade class their own copy of the book being read aloud by their teacher.
the kids are loving this book

Heartwarming story of a special dog...
Good Book. Read it out loud with my children and we ALL enjoyed it!
Chapter book, fiction, much better than the movie. The book came before the movie and goes into more depth with the characters and their relationships. Due to the nature of divorce, lonliness, alcoholism, mental retardation, outcasts in society, etc. I recommend this for children in 4th grade or perhaps even for older children. There are too many wonderful books for children who are in 4th grade or younger to pass those by to move on to this book; read the other more innocent content books first. I read this as an adult in about 3 hours in one sitting and really enjoyed it and it was a tear-jerker in the end. This is a Newbery Honor medal book. Highly recommended.
This is such a sweet story. It is a children's book and I read it in about an hour, but it has such a good message. This would be a great book to read alone, but especially to your children!
A wonderful warm book, about friendship and life, as seen through the eyes of a young girl.
A very quick, easy read...cute story written for a young adults, but I enjoyed it also.
I read this book aloud with my daughter and we laughed out loud many times. It is heart warming, and healing. We have since read all of DiCamillo's books together, and she is one of my favorite authors.
a wonderful book, for all ages. our boys all loved it, but especially good for ages 6-9.
This was the first book i read cover to cover. This book started it all. I was only in the 5th grade, the school was giving these books out for free and i love it. I owe every reading expirience i have to this book. Its a very good book, if it could captivate my mind at 10 years old.
Wonderful...
Wonderful book for children and adults alike. I had heard so much about this book and every wonderful thing I heard was true.
This is a wonderful book for anyone in the mood for a sweet story about a little girl and her dog. It is a book designed for children in upper elementary school, but I enjoyed reading it and I am 30 years old.
A well-crafted tale and a moving novel. A story of community and fellowship, of sweetness, sorrow, and hope. The
Great book! Quick and easy read!
This chapter book, which focuses on community, sorrow and hope, took the world by storm BEFORE the movie release.
This story has many interesting relationships. It was a Newberry Honor book.
Realistic Fiction, Comedy, Family
Great childrens book.
Such a sweet book! :)
I loved this book. If you have a dog you really love, you need to read this book.
A wonderful book. So wonderful that Hollywood followed it, only adding a few extras, when making the movie. Well worth reading
Because of Winn Dixie is a great book. You have to get this if you are a dog lover.
A wonderful uplifting story about making friends in a new town with the help of a stray dog named Winn-Dixie. It made me laugh and it made me cry...to me that is a good read :)
Because of Winn-Dixie is a good, funny book for all ages.
Both Kids and Adults could have a blast reading it.
Both Kids and Adults could have a blast reading it.
This was a really good book, I really enjoyed it.
When ten year old India Opal Buloni moves to Naomi, Florida, with her father, she doesn't know what to expect--least of all, that she'll adopt Winn Dixie, a dog she names after the supermarket where they meet. Before long, Opal and her father realize--with a little help from Winn Dixie -- that while they've both tasted a bit of melancholy in their lives, they still have a whole lot to be thankful for.
Book from which the movies was based. About a young girl and a dog. Newberry Honor Book. My daughter gave it 5 stars.
trying to read all 25 books from world book night...I guess this would be more appreciated by someone from a small town or the south, or both...it was cute
From Amazon.com:
"Because of Winn-Dixie, a big, ugly, happy dog, 10-year-old Opal learns 10 things about her long-gone mother from her preacher father. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends among the somewhat unusual residents of her new hometown, Naomi, Florida. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal begins to find her place in the world and let go of some of the sadness left by her mother's abandonment seven years earlier.
With her newly adopted, goofy pooch at her side, Opal explores her bittersweet world and learns to listen to other people's lives. This warm and winning book hosts an unforgettable cast of characters, including a librarian who fought off a bear with a copy of War and Peace, an ex-con pet-store clerk who plays sweet music to his animal charges, and the neighborhood "witch," a nearly blind woman who sees with her heart. Part Frankie (The Member of the Wedding), part Scout (To Kill a Mockingbird), Opal brings her own unique and wonderful voice to a story of friendship, loneliness, and acceptance. Opal's down-home charm and dead-on honesty will earn her friends and fans far beyond the confines of Naomi, Florida. (Ages 9 and older)"

A realistic, well told story
This short book has nice margins & larger than usual, easy to read font. Each chapter is short & has a nice breaking point. No cliffhangers dragging you from chapter to chapter, just a love for 10 year old Opal and her dog, Winn-Dixie.
Opal tells you her story in a simple, but charming way. There no climatic happy ending, its realistic. Opal learned a lot the summer the book takes place. She grows, makes friends, and still has her sorrows -but she learns to be happy and content even they're very real.
Word to parents: Opals mom left when she was young, and she had a drinking problem. Another woman Opal meets used to as well. The guy Opal works for did jail time (for a minor offense). One of the girl's brother died at age 5. I mention this only so you know some of the content so you have a better idea for deciding if your child is ready to handle the story or not.

Heartwarming story....the movie follows the book very closely and is very good also.
What a great book, definitely 5 stars.
Excellent reading--I really enjoyed reading this book--an easy to pick up and put down type of book.
Very sweet story. I couldn't put it down. I read it in a few short hours! :)
