One in a series. Follows SPORTING CHANCE. Good plot. Military basis.
These plots are getting closer and closer to David Weber's Honor Harrington series, only with horses. I had the irresistible thought that the Baen editor told Moon, "Hey we want to get teenage girls reading science fiction, throw in horses, girls love horses." I have to say that element in the story arc seems awfully forced - Cecilia's thoughts about equine conformation simply don't fit neatly into the rest of the story. Otherwise, this is a good entry in the adventures of Heris Serrano and her friends. I would have liked more tie-in between the attempted invasion fleet and the sabotage on Patchcock, though. I'm also looking with interest at where Moon is going to take the Rejuvenation subplot, because the idea of almost immortality could (and has, in other books) lead to some really interesting times. Looking forward to the next book and hoping it doesn't turn into just another military space opera.
