A very mild mannered book. I kept expecting it to get scary. Some beautiful imagery, the writer is good. But, this book is for the meek at heart, not those that seek a good BOO!!!

I didn't realize that this is a sequel to Simmons' "Summer of Night." It probably would have been better to read "Night" before "Winter Haunting" but, nonetheless, I found this one to be enjoyable and a great psychological ghost story. I have a copy of "Summer of Night" that I intend to read soon. Many events from it were referred to in "Haunting" but this did not detract from the story. Simmons did a great job of building the suspense when Dale Stewart goes back to his childhood town to spend 9 months in the abandoned farmhouse of his childhood friend who was killed when he was a boy in 1960. These events obviously have haunted Stewart throughout his life. When he returns to his boyhood town, he meets some of the people who he knew as a child including the sheriff who was the town bully and a Hollywood actress who was the young vixen of his youth. But is all as it seems to be? Well not really... I don't want to spoil this for anyone so I won't give away anything -- overall, a great ghost story that I would recommend. There are also references in the novel to Henry James' story "The Jolly Corner" which I also need to now read.

Creepy and unsettling. Much more subtle than Stephen King.

A good book - follow up to Summer of Night. It doesn't come close to the same thrill factor that Summer of Night had but it's still a good read.

This is the kind of book that you get afraid to pick up. It is that scary. His writing just creeps you out and keeps you in a psycological terror as to is this real or is it a ghost? Page turning to the last period. You will love it.

This is one of those books that is kind of vague and confusing but then has an unexpected ending that ties everything up.

Dan Simmons is a very talented, genre crossing writer., and IMO, this is an absorbing creepy novel!

This book kept me up reading, and that is no small feat! Simmons creates a sense of place I have seldom seen, giving the book overall a scary feel. I did not like the end action scene much, as it resorts to classic King type of horror as opposed to the psychological scare he had used up till then, but most horror fans will like it, I think. As a writer, I appreciate his metaphors.

With this one, I felt that Simmons let me down. I LOVED LOVED LOVED Summer of Night. This book is the sequel, but it doesn't even touch it. AND if you haven't read Summer of Night, you will not "get" a lot of this book as there are a lot of unexplained references to its far superior predecessor. A disappointing read.
