Creepy, scary, terror! Everything I hate in a book since I get anxiety attacks! BUT, I couldn't put it down!! My eyes were glued from beginning to end and I had dreams about it. It's just not my genre, but what a ride I had!!

Wow! Such a creepy, unique, mesmerizing book! Told from different perspectives in different timelines from the diary of Sara (who was supposedly brutally murdered and rumored to haunt the town) in 1908 to the present day when mysterious vanishings bring a varied group seeking answers in Sara's old family farmhouse together. A perfect spooky winter read!
A very creepy, spooky story, with a bit of Steven King style horror thrown in just for good measure. I enjoyed it and found I was looking forward to reading more of it each night. I have to admit though that it has a little something here and there that is sort of off center, or not in keeping with the quality of the rest of the writing. It wasn't enough to cause me to stop reading though. I forgave the author and went on to the end, which is kind of odd in that when you think you've actually reached the end, you turn the page and there's MORE! That's all I'm going to say. I think lovers of ghostly tales with a lot of chill factor included, will enjoy this book.
This was a great creepy ghost story, it got to the point where I could nost read it at night! I liked the two different times periods it switched between and the parallels made me have to reconsider which time I was reading about, it was a fun disorientation of time. The characters were interesting but not very deep. Some of the turns were unexpected and a little bizarre, but it was well written. The biggest disappointment was the ending was anticlimactic and just faded off.

The story is based on diary pages of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, is found dead in her yard a few months after the tragic death of her young daughter. In the present day, a family that lives in Sara's house stumbles across the diary while searching for clues about their missing mother.
This story kept me on the edge of my seat and turning pages as the mystery unfolded. I'm not a fan of paranormal, but this story was so well told, you almost believed it actually happened. I enjoyed every creepy page of it!

The Winter People is a story told from multiple characters' perspectives, bouncing between two different time periods. That being said, the story was not at all hard to follow and the author ties everything together quite nicely. I definitely would recommend reading this exciting paranormal mystery.

This is a nicely creepy little ghost story with a small and sterling cast. Although the shifts in point of view are sometimes awkward, the story of Sara, her husband Martin and their daughter Gertie builds the sense of dread and foreboding and nicely compliments the present-day story of Ruthie, her mother Alice and her sister Fawn.
Not much can be said of the story without giving away key points, but let me say this. It is reminiscent of some of Stephen King's writing, and the setting is perfect for a ghost tale: atmospheric, claustrophobic, and chilling. The Winter People strayed into the paranormal just a bit too much for me, but I still found it to be a compelling-- and nerve-tingling-- story.

Chilling from the beginning, sometimes horrifying, this will keep you on the edge of your seat. And if you're reading late at night, will keep you far under the covers of the bed. Do the dead really come back? And if they can, what happens? Just because you die does it mean you're gone? This book follows different generations with the same questions. Well written, it reads quickly.
I could not put this book down. This is the third book I have read by this author and by far the best.
The beginning of this book was slightly confusing, bouncing back and forth between time and characters. But eventually it started to make sense and it ended up being quite creepy. It reminded me a little but of Pet Semetary, but with a fresh twist. Pretty solid read.
Jennifer McMahon is one of the finest storytellers out there today for the psychological thriller with a paranormal twist thrown in - she is a superb writer. Having read many of her books, I think this may be my favorite one yet. The [dark] psychological depths of her characters is always critical to the plot, and Winter People does not disappoint on that level. Throwing in a paranormal element in the form of a dark folk legend then brings all the characters that little extra edge. This is essentially a tale about grief, and if you will, a very cleverly spun "zombie" story. But don't shy away because of that label, the richness of the writing takes it far beyond what you'd think of normally in that genre.
This is one of the creepiest books I've ever read! I love this author and I think this may be her best yet! I finished reading it this morning and I cannot stop thinking about it. This one will stick with me for a long, long time!
