I bought this book thinking I would like it well enough but I didn't know I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. The story starts out with a murder/mystery happening right at the beginning. The world that this takes place in starts to build around that event. Here, there are witches who are powerful that get to rule. The other witches are used like slaves to pull their magic to increase the power of the one that they are bonded to. For Miles, he could never stand the thought of servitude to his sister so he fled and joined the army. There, he hid his gifts and worked to become a doctor. All was happy in his life until a mysterious stranger and an almost dead man enter his world. Things get crazy and complicated from there.
The characters, setting and plot were amazing. I loved almost everything about this book. The pace was superb. A couple things that I wasn't keen on was, one, the romance. Only because I am not really into romantic novels. Luckily, they didn't dwell on it too much. The other was the character of Grace (Miles's sister). I can't still decide whether I like her or loathe her. Maybe that it how it was supposed to be.
I did really enjoy this book and look forward to continuing the story with the next book.

I read this in a day and ordered the sequel even before I'd finished. Really engaging read.
