However she doesn't dare reveal her true identity to the authorities. This book once again is a testament to Brown's gift as a talented storyteller. Very spell binding! Good book.

This is an excellent suspense/romance book. I loved it and could not put it down. This is one of my favorite Sandra Brown books.
Although I enjoyed the story and the romance a great deal, I have difficulty suspending disbelief for the final chapters. Woman discovers her husband is guilty of heinous crimes and goes on the run. A marshall is dispatched to take her into protective custody.

She never suspected that coming to Prosper had plunged her into the midst of a chilling conspiracy of bigotry and hate or that she had become a player in an abhorrent deception. Soon Kendall starts losing cases she should have won. She feels surrounded by whispers and secrets, fear, and frightened eyes. Finally Kendall becomes a witness to a horrifying crime. With shocking clarity she realizes that she has misjudged the people around her. Worst of all, she has confused the happiness she wanted so badly with the nightmare she is now forced to endure - a precarious existence that will keep her on the run until justice prevails in Prosper...and until her child is safe.

The first chapter of this book has a couple huge factual errors. I would not go further. They were huge errors of simple physics, and I could not get past them and continue with the book. In all my years of reading, this is only the second book that I have put down before I was done. Very disappointing.

A gripping story from the very beginning. From the moment I started it, I couldn't put it down. A definite must-read for mystery addicts. Twists and turns abound heavily in this book. You never know what to expect next.
The best Sandra Brown I have read!
very good
One of the best, most complex Sandra Brown page-turners I've read -- enough twists and turns to make it interesting to the end (yet it still remains believable). Slow builds with tension from page one.

Kendall Deaton wants to be the best public defender the town of Prosper, South Carolina, has ever seen. She figures her dream is in the bag; she is married to the handsome newspaper editor, her father-in-law is a well-respected and popular man in the community, and the downtrodden of Prosper need a devoted advocate. What Kendall doesn't expect, though, is a town so entrenched in bigotry and "perfection" that she soon becomes the enemy, even to her new family. The book opens as Kendall pulls herself from the wreckage of a serious car accident. In the hospital, Kendall is careful not to disclose the true past of the seriously injured male driver; she tells the hospital personnel that he's her husband, and even though he's suffering from amnesia, he knows it is not true. Brown unfolds the story by alternating between the present and the past, keeping the reader guessing what's what all along. Though not an elegant writer, this prolific author writes a true page-turner that is recommended for fans of graphic crime fiction.

another good sandra brown mystery
Cheap, easy read. Not particularly believable, but good airplane material. Didn't like the way it used images of genuine atrocities to get you emotionally involved in an otherwise vacuous plot.
Suspenseful alot of twist and turns and you think you have it figured out and you don't--One I read by the pool last summer
A wonderful page turner of suspense.
Great read! Sandra Brown is great at combining romance and mystery.

Unlikely tale of a woman attorney on the run after witnessing a KKK-type killing, tangled up with false identities and double crosses all around.
I really liked this one. It starts off with questions right away and sucked me right in. Interesting plot with some twists in it.
Small town secrets, bigotry, hatred and deception, THE WITNESS is the story about an idealist lawyer who gets tangled up in a web of lies.
The day she married Matt Burnwood, she thought that life couldn't get any more perfect. Not only has she caught the heart of the handsome and rich newspaper editor, she is also on her way to being the best public defender in Prosper, South Carolina. As a girl who dreamt of a perfect life, Kendall thought that she had it all. Until the night she stumbled upon the truth behind the town's perfection and the secrets that involve her very own husband. Now the lawyer has become a fugitive, wanted by the people who will stop at nothing to ensure that she is silenced forever.
That was a year ago. Now as she stares at the man lying in the hospital bed, who has no single memory of the deadly chain of events that brought them together, Kendall knows that deception is her only refuge. For if the man she calls John--the man she claims her husband--regains his memory, it will be all over for Kendall and her son.
From the time I started reading the prologue, I was caught by the mystery surrounding the car crash and the two main characters. The way the author set up the plot and each chapter had me glued to the story. What really happened, what is Kendall running away from, who is the amnesiac that she fears--these were the questions that continued to bug me and I found myself turning page after page, reading well into the night and until the early hours of the morning waiting for everything to unravel. Kendall is one of Sandra Brown's best heroines. Her courage, intelligence and absolute love for her child, the way she would do anything to protect Kevin makes you feel for her plight. I found myself getting nervous each time I thought that the bad guys were getting closer. As for John, although we don't really get to know the real him until halfway through, I thought the way the author kept up the truth surrounding his identity added strength to the mystery. And let's not forget the secondary characters. From the fun-loving Ricky Sue, the too-serious FBI agent Pepperdyne and the villains, no part of the story is wasted on any of these characters.
THE WITNESS is a compelling romance mystery that is bound to get you hooked from the start. Along with BREATH OF SCANDAL, this is one of Sandra Brown's best novels. Highly recommended.

I haven't read this book yet - it is a duplicate of one I already have, but I have enjoyed several other Sandra Brown books. The back blurb states:

Kendall pulls herself out of a wrecked car and also saves the lives of her baby and a man. He has amnesia and, she says he is her husband. An interesting plot.
Kendall Deaton moves to a small South Carolina town to become the public defender, and immediately falls in love with the town's golden boy, Matt Burnwood. After a whirlwind courtship and marriage, Kendall's life seems ideal. But when she stumbles on to the truth about her husband and the town she lives in, Kendall goes on the run for her life. Months later she and her baby son are found. U.S. Marshall John McGrath is dispatched to Colorado to return her as a material witness. A car accident leaves John with no memory and Kendall takes advantage of the fact, telling the hospital that he is her husband. She soon plans her immediate escape, knowing that her only hope for survival is to flee.
This story actually starts with the accident, and the past is told through flashbacks. I was immediately sucked into the story, wanting to know what secret the town was harboring and how Kendall was going to elude both the FBI and her in-laws while on the run with a baby and an amnesiac. Good story. My rating: 4 Stars.

excellent book - grabs you from the first few pages & you won't want to put it down!
This was quite a good book. It was no real surprise as I haven't read one of Sandra Brown's that I haven't enjoyed.
Another great thriller. Takes place in South Carolina. Kendall is the best public defender in Prosper, and she has stumbled upon the town's chilling secret....and her marriage to one of the most powerful men in town becomes a living hell. She has to get her daughter and herself away before it's too late. Filled with suspense!
quick read - pretty engrossing. Starts with lots of secrets that don't unfold till the end - till you know them, you are trying to guess what they are - which makes for a fun read too.
Great suspense novel. Real page turner. Good character developement.

As a fan of Ms. Brown's romance novels I hesitated to read her suspense novels. My aunt recommended this book to me and I'm ever thankful she did. This is definitely one of the best books I've read this year.
Kendall Deaton is a Public Defender in the small town of Prosper, South Carolina. She marries handsome hunk Matt Burnwood expecting to live a fairy tale life. But her life then changes. She is witness to a hideous event and is running for her life. To reveal more details would ruin the story.
This book is just awesome. It has a spine-tingling plot with twists that will literally keep you on the edge of your seat. The plot will keep you reading for hours on end. It's almost as if the pages turn themselves and you have been sucked into the story. The characters are wonderfully written. Kendall is someone you have to admire and you really don't know her whole story until the very last page. I can't say it enough, this book hooks you and won't let go! I agree with the other reviewer that I would like to see a book about Ricki Sue and Jim Pepperdyne. One could definitely see the sparks flying off the pages with those two.

Kendall Deaton Burnwood is an idealistic public defender, and U.S. Marshal John McGrath, is returning her to Prosper, S.C., as a material witness when their car crashes into a ravine in Georgia. With her three-month-old in tow, Kendall tries repeatedly to abandon John, who's hobbled by temporary amnesia and a leg injury. Kendall fears the town of Prosper for good reason: it's where she witnessed her husband and father-in-law, ringleaders of a white-supremacist vigilante group, ritualistically execute one of her clients. Evading Matt and Gibb Burnwood as well as the FBI, Kendall is also pursued across the South by the Crook twins, vengeful brothers of a disgruntled client whose idea of a celebration is a drinking binge and the deflowering of a 12-year-old niece.

Book was thoroughly interesting from beginning to end.
Great book. I didn't want to put it down!
Kendall pulls herself and her baby out of a wrecked car, and a mixture of courage and fear gets her to the top of a ravine, where she flags down help. But she doesn't dare reveal her true identity or that of her amnesiac passenger to the authorities. Instead, she plans her immediate escape. Her perilous flight begins.
Sandra Brown at her usual best.
Kendall Deaton pulls herself and her baby out of a wrecked car, and a mixture of courage and fear gets her to the top of a ravine, where she flags down help. But...
This book was all over the place. It had a good main storyline, but the other smaller storyline ideas were loosely tied to the main one and really just seemed frivolous. Nonetheless, it was a good story and moved quickly
A terrific story.
