What a great book! I thought this would be a fantasy, but was instead set in 18th? or 19th? century England. I found it to be a fascinating story, complete with crazy royalty, ghosts, romance, and murder.
Perfect for Sunday afternoon relaxing

A young woman's father dies leaving her penniless in the 1700s in England. Her path leads her to a duchess who believes she may be the long lost daughter of a medium who can contact the spirit world. A quick moving read, lighthearted with nothing serious about it. Pure diversion!

Not what I expected, very good read.
With her silver-gilt curls and sea green eyes, Marianne Ransom was a spirited orphan surviving the streets of Victorian London. When she was brought to the opulent home of a wealthy Duchess, the ghostly presence of her father, a man renowned for his psychic powers, called to her from beyond. Marianne, too, had the gift of second sight. But as she soon learned, it wasn t always a gift. Sometimes it could be a perilous even deadly trap!
With her silver-gilt curls and sea-green eyes, Marianne Ransom was a striking beauty, a spirited orphan surviving the backstreets of Victorian London. But there was something more that set her apart...She possessed the gift of second sight, a power that initially awakened in her when a twist of fate brought her to the opulent home of a wealthy Duchess. It was there that the ghostly presence of her own father, a man renowned for his psychic powers, called to her from beyond. But soon her magnificent surroundings-and her powerful abilities-become a perilous trap, as Marianne discovers that knowing too much can be deadly.
Is the daughter of Houdini or not? Quick read.
Young Marianne Ransom is astonishing for her beauty, intelligence, and courageous spirit, all of which she needs to help her survive as an orphan on the streets of Victorian London. Soon, her trusting naivete leads her to the luxurious mansion of a wealthy duchess. There she gets a strange visit from the ghost of her dead father, a renowned magician with great powers who warns her of a deadly trap. Meanwhile, Marianne discovers her own gift that will have unexpected consequences not only for her, but for those around her: psychic powers.
A very enjoyable read. A thrilling ghost story.
I was disappointed with the plot of this book. The synopsis was promising but the actual story was not at all interesting to me. I don't know if I should try any more by Barbara Michaels.
