No Wonder My Parents Drank: Tales from a Stand-Up Dad
No Wonder My Parents Drank Tales from a StandUp Dad
Author: Jay Mohr
YOU?LL NEVER SLEEP IN THIS TOWN AGAINFrom Saturday Night Live to stand-up, from a blockbuster film career to the star of CBS?s hit television show Gary Unmarried, Jay Mohr is one of the funniest people in comedy today. Now, in this down and dirty tale of modern fatherhood, Mohr shares his stories as a first-time parent. No Wonde...  more »reveals the details behind Mohr?s humiliating test-tube conception attempts and then recounts the trauma of not only having to keep this child alive, but having to spend time alone with him! He waxes poetic about dirty diapers; spins theories on spanking; and mulls over the more hidden advantages of parenthood, like carpool lane access, carte blanche to use the ladies restroom, and an alibi for missing family dinners. Mohr describes, in painfully funny detail, the bizarre situations that all parents inevitably face but can never prepare for (such as when his kid discovered his dog?s rear end) as well as moments of pure joy like taking his son to his first baseball game. Mohr reports on the hilarious wisdom that his son, Jackson, has taught him?like why it?s fun to play "Kissy Boy" with the other boys at recess, how important sunscreen is for avoiding a "sunborn," and how awesome it is to get a "rainbow belt" in karate.Riotously acerbic and refreshingly honest, No Wonder My Parents Drank casts the very funny Jay Mohr with an even funnier mini-me sidekick as a supporting character in a little comedic love story that every person who either is a parent or has a parent will find delightful.

Good book. Not as funny as I imagined it to be coming from a stand-up comedian. (I wouldn't buy tickets to his show based on the material in the book). Writing is a little different coming from a dad's point of view. He comes across as a VERY loving and caring hands on dad. A lot of the stories were more along the lines of the everyday life of anyone with children, maybe laugh out loud funny for those who don't. Many of his stories are just fact of life and about anyone with a child older than 8 has lived through most of the "unbeliveable, this can't be happening" moments.
I didn't find the foul language to be too much in the book. In fact it only seemed to me the cursing was to put emphasis on his points. If you do not like foul language at all skip this book. He talks about being going to mass and helping at his church, so didn't find the cusing to be out of control. It's not like he is dropping f-bombs on every page!
He idolizes his wife, his son's stepmother, probably because he married "up". That gets a little old.
Anyway, overall I thought it was a good book just not one I would spend $ on.
But that is the whole point of PBS. Giving you a chance to read a little bit of everything without spending a lot. (Just a waiting period!)

Funny it is. But it is also full of foul language; and when I say "full," I mean that Mohr seems unable to write almost anything without it. Too bad the author had to spoil (IMHO) the book this way, some interesting comments on parenting and a wise and loving wife, and he obviously loves his son a lot and wants the best for him.
