This is one of my favorite authors. When I read her books I not only enjoy a good work of fiction and facinating characters, I also learn new things. Science and geography, and history are all cleverly woven throughout. This book was no exception, but the things I learned about the US/Mexico border and the trade in drugs and humans there wasn't pleasant. Cold, hard truths...but too much like watching the evening news.

This was my first Elizabeth Lowell book to read. I typically do not enjoy books with a running drug theme, and I put off reading this book for that reason. However, once I started reading this book, the story grabbed me and made we want to keep reading. The mix of suspense, a long time secret, a touch of romance, and the details of how the underworld of drugs works keeps this story interesting and intriguing. Some of the reviews I read said this was not Elizabeth Lowell's best work and that the drug trade details made it confusing. I did not find it confusing. I liked it enough to seek out her other books. If this book truly was not one of her best works, then I cannot wait to start reading the rest of her books!

I loved this book. I got a little bored with all the legal speak about the US/Mexican border, but the story line was great.

Wow - a very good book. I haven't read this author before, but I think I would like to find more of her work. This book really keeps your attention and reminds you, don't EVER come between a woman and her child! Lots of action and suspense kept the storyline going. Highly recommended!

A typical, fast-paced Lowell book, this focuses on the drug trade as it passes through and over the border between Tijuana and San Diego. Although a novel, one has the feeling that Lowell did her research well, and events as they play out could well be happening right now. Rich with villains, you'll appreciate the "happy" ending, because getting there was no easy feat!

A mother's worst nightmare of an endangered child is just one breathless element of Lowell's latest romantic thriller (after Always Time to Die). Newly divorced California judge Grace Silva discovers her billionaire ex-husband, Ted Franklin, is missing, after she's summoned to the exclusive Mexican prep school where her 15-year-old computer whiz son, Lane, is being held hostage. Ted has crossed Hector Rivas Osuna, the ruthless kingpin of the most violent crime family in Tijuana, and Grace learns that Lane will be killed if she doesn't turn over the millions Ted has stolen from Osuna. She seeks the help of Joe Faroe, an ex who predated Ted and who may be Lane's biological father; Joe works for an elite private investigation firm. Lowell's convincing depiction of the Mexican drug trade illuminates the dangerous intersection of her characters' personal lives with international politics and organized crime. Events unfold in a maze of talk and double-talk, but the payoff is solid as the family reunites, finding that both love and the price of freedom are nonnegotiable.
