It was the end of a magnificent era for the warring tribes of the high Dakota plains--when the Great Chiefs still raised the battle lance...and the sunburnt buffalo grass was stained with the blood of Crows, Sioux and Blackfeet.Into the vast unyielding wilderness came the indomitable scout White River, torn by loyalties to both the red men and the white. In the twilight of a great and noble people, caught in the relentless tide of invaders from the East, he would bear witness to the violent dawning of a brilliant and tragic new day.

New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell brings back Kay Scarpetta, consulting forensic pathologist for the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, in her grittiest and most compelling novel. In rural North Carolina, the brutal murder of eleven-year-old Emily Steiner has shaken a small town. But more disturbing are the details of the crime, chilling reminiscent of the handiwork of a serial killer who has eluded the unit for years. Into this volatile atmosphere comes Scarpetta's ingenious, rebellious niece Lucy, an FBI intern with a promising future in Quantico's security violation. While coming to terms with Lucy, Kay must conduct a grisly forensic investigation at a clandestine research facility known as The Body Farm. There she will find more answers to Emily Steiner's murder - and evidence that paints a picture of a crime more horrifying than she imagined . . .

This early (1937) novel by the world's bestselling author, who died in 1989, offers a rich feast to not only dedicated Simenon readers but to those who value certain literary traditions as well. In a story that owes much to Flaubert, the body of Oscar Donadieu, a heroic figure in the small town of La Rochelle, is found floating in the harbor that is home port to the ships that contribute to the vast Donadieu family fortunes. As his family tries to function without their patriarch, extraordinary entanglements emerge. Into this web of festering relationships comes Phillipe Dargens, an ambitious young man who hopes to marry into the family. Suspicions of murder abound, as assorted intrigues bubble just beneath the surface of life in this provincial world. Timeless in its scope, magnificent in its descriptive power, this is a book to be savored for its texture and Proustian flourishes as well as its knowing portrait of a family rich in material things and impoverished in love and faith.

Defense attorney Paul Madriani has quite a challenge in the eighth legal thriller in which he stars: his close-mouthed client, accused of a high-profile murder, refuses to provide information vital to developing his defense. Only a military marksman could have fired the two closely spaced bullets that killed Madelyn Chapman, head of a company responsible for terrorist-searching software used by the U.S. government. Evidence points to Chapman's former bodyguard and former lover, Army Sergeant Emiliano Ruiz. Madriani realizes that the key to proving Ruiz's innocence concerns seven years missing from Ruiz's resume, but Ruiz won't fill in the necessary details.

Most critics and readers agree that HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX marks a turning point in J. K. Rowling's enormously popular series in that the story takes on a more mature, darker tone. Now 15 years old, Harry faces the downside of being the world's most famous wizard-in-training and must adjust to changes in his relationships with friends and mentors. He also learns something quite disconcerting about his deceased parents and begins to realize how his personal demons make him vulnerable to the evil Lord Voldemort. Further complications arise when Harry grows disillusioned with the government of the magical realm and begins to question the power of the authorities at Hogwarts.

Eleven-year-old Harry Potter was a baby when his parents died, and since that time he has been living with his horrible Uncle Vernon, dislikable Aunt Petunia, and truly disgusting cousin Dudley. Miserable and lonely, Harry is shocked when he receives a letter inviting him to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. At this special school, which is kept a secret from all those not involved in the worlds of magic, Harry begins to learn the truth about the death of his parents and discovers his own unbelievably amazing family history. This book is the first entry in the phenomenally popular Harry Potter series of books. Enjoyed by both children and adults, these books literally changed the face of children's publishing when, as a result of their stunning popularity, the New York Times began compiling and publishing a list of best-selling children's books--for the first time in that newspaper's history.
