Molly Abberwick, trustee of her late father's foundation, is furious with her new consultant, scientist-philosopher Dr. Harry Stratton Trevelyan. But she's got bigger problems: a stalker, and sinister pranks...and only Harry takes her seriously. I loved these characters! They are odd and funny and sometimes outrageous, and I enjoyed every minute in their company!

But an arranged dinner with a city-bred columnist went from bad to worse when they witnessed a mob hit outside the restaurant. To Jason, she was Bonnie the Bumpkin. I liked her (plucky, of course); I liked him (big, handsome, control freak that he is)...the romping around was very entertaining. No surprises, but a good tale set outside of New Orleans.

I really liked this one - (although I'm a fan of Iris Johansen a anyway.) I thought the characters were well developed, the plot satisfyingly twisted, and all within the realm of "could happen"....which always makes it more frightening to me.

As soon as she arrives for the annual family reunion, Laura Bartone realizes that something is terribly wrong with her sister. When Caroline confronts Laura and their brother, Steve, with devastating allegations about their mother, the three are forced to face the past, their own culpability, and their common need for love and forgiveness. This is another lovely novel from Elizabeth Berg in which she examines how some families grasp blindly at the ties that hold them together, and some pick them apart.

Called to testify in the sensational "Mafia Boss Murder" trial unfolding in sunny California, journalist Sally Harrinton is a key witness for the defense. Unfortunately, Sally knows more than she'd like to about the accused. After all, the East Coast mobster once tried to have her killed. Sally Harrington is a wonderful heroine, fun to spend time with, and this is a quick-moving plot. Good read.

Hotshot investigative reporter, Jack Tagger, now bangs out obituaries for a South Florida daily. Jimmy Stoma, infamous front man of Jimmy and The Slut Puppies, turns up dead in a fishy-smelling scuba "accident". As clues from Stoma's music give Jack the chance to trade obits for a story that could hit the front page, murder gives his career a new lease on life. This is a frisky novel - fresh and juicy - and vintage Carl Hiaasen. Lots of fun!

Houston bounty hunter Dixie Flannigan is about to learn that there are limits to even her toughness. Parker Dann, accused of killing a child in a drunk-driving accident, is a bail jumper fleeing the prospect of a long prison term. It will take every ounce of Dixie's Superbitch abilities to get them back to Texas in one piece, preferably before her bitch facadecracks and before she starts believing that Parker Dann is...innocent? Dixie is appealing and sympathetic - the plot is convoluted and the climax chilling. A good mystery.

This is a small (8x5") hardback.
Definitely a twenty-something book...lots of hot young New Yorkers working in publishing, starting their own magazine. Samantha and her best friend, Tom, go from man-crazy (both of them)playing-in-the-city-and-their-jobs immaturity to "gosh, I guess I'm growing up" awareness. Lots of snappy patter - overuse of the word "giggle" - grows on you and gets more interesting in the last half.

Definitely creepy - but a first rate thriller. Set in a small Georgia college town, it introduces Sara Linton (pediatrician and coroner) - her ex-husband (chief of police) - and a serial killer who takes them for a harrowing ride. Truly a "page turner"...kept me up until I finished it!

As a child, Reena Hale witnessed a horrifying but in some way compelling fire that engulfed her family's business. Now she's an arson investigator and finds her strenth and wits constantly tested - although sometimes the job feels like a snap compared to her lovelife. Now someone is stalking her..and setting fires.

This book will keep you turning the pages. Compelling characters and plot, nicely paced, and a love story that will make you smile. And Reena's oh-so-Italian family is truly memorable.

Emma Lachance is taken by surprise when she runs into her friend and high-school crush, Finn Duhon...but the last thing she expects to find at the same time is the corpse of her friend, a local journalist who has been stirring decidedly muddy waters. Emma's husband, the Mayor, didn't like the late journalist, and even more, doesn't like Finn or the fact that Emma is part of a group for women that is helping her find the strength to leave the abusive, unfaithful Mayor.
The murders start to pile up, and Emma and Finn start to heat up very satisfactorily.

She is more shocked to return home one night to a grizzly scene and her sister dead. Ignoring the warnings of cool-headed detective Ed Jackson, Grace sets her own daring trap. Great Nora Roberts.

Ya gotta like Quinn Harlowe...a little flaky but the girl never gives up! Then there's the hot Huck McCabe (or is it Boone?) - and a suspected vigilante group - and some more undercover action (in both senses of the word). Good story, fast plot, fun read.

The basics: surfer girl goes to small island in Scotland, meets very hot ghost. You do have to suspend disbelief, but the characters are live and lively, and the plot, such as it is, moves right along. The ending is a little too easy, but this is a charming, fast moving, fun way to spend a few hours.

Chickpea Lover (Not a Cookbook) (Five Star First Edition Women's Fiction Series)
Review Date: 7/27/2006

Thirty-nine year old Liz Adams looks like she has everything: handsome husband, beautiful home, job she loves as head of a college nursing program. She also has a 10-years-younger lover who dresses as a chickpea while running his Mideastern food stand. Soon she has an unplanned pregnancy and has been unjustly fired. She learns that being passive is not as satisfying as taking action. This story flies along...no surprises, but very affecting characters.
