I read this in high school and recently re-read it. A short book but very powerful and one of those books that should be required reading for everyone. Unbelievable and downright depressing and disheartening at times but important to read and know about.

Julien St. Clair, Earl of March, is bored with his life. So when he sees Katharine Brandon, dressed as a boy, "die" in a mock duel, he finds himself intrigued by her. He is determined to have her, although she has a dark secret which stands in the way of him and their happily ever after.

An absolutely wonderful coming-of-age story. More than the story and the themes of this book, which are great, I loved the characters, most of all the Finch family: Atticus, Jem and Scout.
