Frankly I was disappointed in the book. For the first time ever I have to say I like the movie much better - it tells a better story. I've also seen the play version and it was wonderful.

This story reminded me of Joy in the Morning or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It is a heartwarming story that takes place in Brooklyn in 1963 at the time of the assassination of JFK. I want to read more from Denis Hamill!

I enjoyed this book because of all the references to Birmingham, AL, where I have lived for the past 3 years. In some places Flagg seems to be trying to pack in too much information, but still a good read.
