Lots of recipes; very nice pictures; heavy book! There are all kinds of cookie recipes here sure to please everyone. Instructions are simple and most are easy to make.

Pretty neat stories where Mrs. Watson plays the sleuth. Light, entertaining read, along the lines of a cozy; fast read. A lady with spunk!

Elinore P. Stewart was commissioned by Atlantic Monthly magazine to allow her personal letters to be published. She wrote often to Mrs. Coney, apparently a lady whom she cared for a great deal and this comes across in her charming letters. Once her letters begin to be published, she receives letters from subscribers who wish to rapport with her. She is open about her feelings as well as descriptive in her accounts of daily life. Many readers felt she only wrote about the good parts and was not being realistic. As one knows, there are many different kinds of people in the world and to me, Elinore is a woman who tries to see the best in life despite hardships and trials. It would have been easy to write about the discomforts but she was writing to her friends and was pouring out part of her true soul in her letters.
This particular edition includes many of her letters which were not published and you can see the difference as she writes so much more freely than her other two books of letters. This is my favorite edition as I get more than a peek at who Elinore really is as a person at that time and place. She takes pains to describe nature and people, especially to Mrs. Coney who is blind. I really enjoyed reading her letters and do recommend that if you have any interest in how life was back then for the woman homesteader, give this book a try. Elinore describes herself as very plain but her writing is anything but; in fact it is rather charming and touching. Her love for her friends and family comes across as well as her thoughts about some of the people she lives near and encounters.

A strange tale. The chapters are all times on the clock. I believe it spans two days. We are like watchers peeping into the going-ons of mainly two sisters and their interactions with a few minor characters. Two very different sisters. I found it a little disturbing and a strange read.

A very short and insightful tale, a quick read.
Father McKenzie is elderly and is in charge of a parish in a poor area. Unforunately, his health has not been very good lately and he finds out that he has cancer and not long to live. He has chosen not to share this info with anyone just yet.
He has a small congregation with a few faithful elderly women who are regulars. He has come to know them quite well over the years. In his heart, he realizes these women are lonely and he understands loneliness. He gets a surprise from one of them, a most delightful and unexpected one.
One day, a young boy comes into the church and into Father McKenzie's life. He befriends the boy. But his upstart housekeeper talks a little too freely and things have to change for the boy and priest. Also Father McKenzie meets and speaks to another man who just found out he was adopted and feels betrayed, not knowing about this for years.
You cannot help but be drawn into the lives of the main characters. I recommend this to those who enjoy Miss Read and Jan Karon. It is a charming little story.

A roller coast ride of a story! Action packed and swift paced, for those who love Cop stories.
Here we have two cops who link up and make it their goal to "clean up" alphabet city located in Manhattan, NY from its drugs infestation. This takes place in the 80s and 90s when you could find any kind of drug for sale on every corner, stoop or building. Codella, one of the two cops, passes alphabet city on his way to the Police Academy when he begins training as a cop. He sees first-hand the dealers and junkies lined up. He sees the end result of countless junkies nodding out, walking/staggering without aim and just barely making it across the street. Thus the desire to clean up these streets starts to build as he passes by daily on his way to the Police Academy. Eventually He meets his perfect partner to help him achieve his goal about Alphabet City, which is called this because some of the streets are the letters of the alphabet starting with A Street.
The two partners want to locate the drug lord and eliminate him and his hold over the alphabet streets. And they set out to do just that. Lots of chases, shootings, beatings and violence but it won't deter those two. Great read!

Great series taking place in Alpine, WA, a fictitious city and the protagonist is a single mom who buys the local paper and becomes the editor. There are a number of quirky characters and lots of murder going on. This is the first book in the series and I recommend it to someone who enjoys cozies. Personally I like this series better than her bed and breakfast series.

Here we have an author doing a take on the hardboiled genre but with a cute funny edge to it as well as involving a church and its choir. Good for laughs and a delight to read. Funny series.

This version of the Bible, the American Standard, is supposedly the closest in translation to the Hebrew and Greek text Bibles. I found it easy to read and understand when compared to the KJV, in particular. But the original 1901 edition is very hard to find and you have to be careful not to get the Watchtower version. Their Gospel of John reads ..."and the Word was a god."

It is 1889 and young Dr. Carroll comes to Philadelphia to study medicine under the auspices of Dr. Osler, a brilliant man ahead of his time. One day while doing autopsies, Dr. Osler acts very strange upon coming upon the corpse of a young and beautiful girl. Another young doctor, "Turk", also behaves oddly and both reactions are noted by Dr. Carroll. Dr. Carroll has a suspicion of something being a little weird when Turk invites him out at night, something he has never done before. Then the next day Turk is found dead and matters really begin to get worse. It is well written, I thought, and atmospheric of the time period. The many insights into how medicine was at that time and some of the new developments were quite interesting, insightful and informative.

This takes place on an island that is separated from the mainland. A group of supposed murderers/criminals/thieves, who have all gotten away with their crime, have been invited by post. No one knows anyone else. There are servants there to attend to their needs. They are all to spend the weekend there in order to get the prize but instead one by one, they begin to die. Is it murder? And who is the murderer? And why isn't their host there to greet them? Or is he/she?

I have not finished this Study Bible but I must say it is the BEST one I have read to date. I have read 10 different Study Bible Translations with this one being the 11th and I LOVE the articles, verse explanations and insights. There are insight references to various religions and what verses they sometimes take and "twist" to use to justify a certain rule/belief in their religion. Most of the articles focus on topics relating to Christianity and do a short in-depth study of a topic related to that specific verse/chapter. One of the first examined is about Evolution since we start with Genesis.
I most highly recommend this Study Bible to anyone, and especially those who wish to go beyond simply reading verses. This book challenges you to think and reason. It presents its material in an easy manner to read and understand. Here you will be taught useful information when witnessing to others as well as where a particular religion got some of their belief ideas in addition to helping to educate you and strengthen your own faith.
I most highly recommend this Study Bible to anyone, and especially those who wish to go beyond simply reading verses. This book challenges you to think and reason. I love Calvin and Hobbes and this is my favorite collection. I really like his snowmen and even more so, his parents reactions to them. I introduced Hubby to Calvin and he loves him as much as I do. And Hubby is a fan of The Incredible Hulk so you can imagine that Calvin really must be something for him to love him! lol

This is the first book in the 2 books so far series and it was quaint and interesting. The author turns up at this B&B by chance or fate, having just gotten in his car and driven then taken a ferry across the Puget Sound. Upon arriving he quickly realizes this is not your typical B&B but he enjoys his time spent with the bachelor brothers, the owners, and their other guests. This is a somewhat isolated B&B, not fancy or fussy. They do provide some activities like badminton or croquet but the real draw is the library full of all kinds of books and the conversations which often center around books, what else. Here, finally at the B&B you will have the time to get to those books you never got around to reading before in your busy life. The variety is amazing. You are served a large Breakfast but for Lunch and Supper you either use their kitchen to cook for yourself or possibly if the one restaurant is open in town, you may be lucky to get something there. But honestly, folks come for the ambience and the books. A bibliophile's heaven! I know that I would be totally set for my stay though I may need to bring a crossword book or two just in case. I love the guests stories/comments. The book is set up in small "chapters" varying between the each brother's ruminations and the comments and observations left by the guests. Imagine, they have never advertised and yet are full up every year! There you meet Mrs. Rochester their parrot (he uses a little profanity) and Waffle, their cat. Sign me up for late September when the kiddies are back in school!

This is book two in the Bachelor Brothers' Bed & Breakfast. I did not enjoy this book as much as the first. There was a lot about Solomon Solomon and honestly, I got tired of reading about him and his lousy poetry but it was wrapped up in the end, so to speak. I am not overly fond of poetry. This collection was comprised of more of the brothers' themselves musings and they were not too funny, to me anyway. Also the book lists did not add to the story so I could have done without that. I had to really stick with this to finish the book.

I just LOVE this book. Edgar has a way with matching photos to cute little verses. I still read my copy when I need a laugh. Any cat lover should enjoy this book and I only hope he comes out with more of the same in the future! A GREAT stocking stuffer for that cat lover!!

Interesting memoir of a white liberal male joining the NYPD directly after 9-11. The author has his own way of analyzing criminal encounters as well as his unique methods of handling these "jobs" and some of his partners cannot believe his advice or outcome. I would have given it five stars but his romantic interest and pursuit became way too tiresome to read about and actually took away from this autobiographical book. Honestly I was truly surprised he stuck it out for three years.

This is an excellent book, and it is her debut book, by Sarah Cox, a real WPC in the UK. The story was a tad uncomfortable like stories of abuse can be, but Cox fleshed out her characters well and kept your interest. A little bit of a twist at the end but is it really a true ending or a made up one to clear herself and her son from murder charges. You decide. I hope she continues to write more.
