The Elsie books are great! I read them aloud to my 11 year old daughter. We are only reading the original versions. Some of the vocabulary is above her, so we stop & define/discuss the words. The main character is rather dramatic - typical of the writing of this era, I think. There are many exemplary moral lessons in each story. We are on book 4 & have loved each one.

This book really explains so many things in so few pages. I highly recommend it. It covers the different periods of American Literature as well as why Christians need to read and why they should read secular literature as well as Christian lit.
