The BFG is truly one of Roald Dahl's best books and a huge favourite at our house. It's a laugh out loud tale with all sorts of signature Roald Dahl silliness that will delight your kids.
Sophie, who is an orphan, catches a glimpse of something mysterious out of her window during the witching hour one night. Something mysterious and taller than the house across the street - a giant! So begins a wonderful friendship and a touching parable about what it means to be different and to be true to yourself. My 5 year old loves this book and we've read it over and over.

What do you read when your kids get too old for Charlie and Lola? Clarice Bean!
She is a wonderfully complicated thinker in just that way that appeals to kids. We devoured all three chapter books of Clarice Bean and eagerly await more.

My 5 year old loves these books and I do too. A tail of a young boy teamed with an old woman as the best ghost hunters around, what could be better? Well they have an assistant who is a ghost himself!
I highly recommend this series and they are good for younger children of you read them aloud.

An excellent Gothic style thriller, evocative of a time long ago and the issues with class system in England. The house is an almost fully developed character inciting lust, envy and desire in all except those who live there. I highly recommend The Little Stranger.

An interesting mix of fantasy and reality - much like all of our lives. The characters attempts to find truth and balance in their own lives and families will echo most reader's own inner lives.

An interesting exploration of the possible continuation of Timothy Cratchit from A Christmas Carol. I found it interesting to see the back story and Tim's complicated relationship with his father. His pursuit of the mystery in the story serves as a secondary backdrop to the other characters who are reasonable facsimilies of Dickensian characters but none of them have quite the depth of pathos that Dickens was such a master of. Still an interesting read.
