Frank Behr is a typical investigator -- he likes to play by his own rules, etc. Behr is working for an exclusive investigation company, and it's an uncomfortable fit, both literally and philosophically. The uneasy stability is quickly rocked by a burst of automatic weapons fire as an attempt is made on the prominent client, and Behr manages to protect him and repel the attackers. Though Behr is celebrated for his heroism, he can't help but investigate what happened in that garageâand why the Indianapolis cops seem to be burying the incident.

Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast is missing, presumed dead. Sick with grief, Pendergast's ward, Constance, retreats to her chambers beneath the family mansion at 891 Riverside Drive--only to be taken captive by a shadowy figure from the past - Pendergast's brother - thought to be dead. Proctor, Pendergast's longtime bodyguard, springs to action, chasing Constance's kidnapper through cities, across oceans, and into wastelands unknown. But Constance is really not kidnapped - she is working on a plan of her own.

I do not like books that involve time travel - hence my low rating. I did not actually read the book. As soon as I realized it involved time travel I closed it. Amazone rates it a 4.5 out of 5, so it must be good if you like time travel. It makes my head hurt, so I abalndoned it.

This is a good story that moves at a good pace. The main character is a profiler but being female she gets some pushback from the old school male members of the group, including her boss. They are trying to catch a serial killer who kills women and in the process establishes a pattern of taking certain body parts from every woman murdered. The story includes the profiler's personal struggles as well. I liked her and the story.

Absolute Fear (New Orleans, Bk 4) (Audio CD) (Unabridged)
Review Date: 12/22/2021

I finished this book but almost stopped a few chapters from the end I was so sick of the ridiculous behavior of the characters. Eve is maddening. She thinks her lover shot her and he would have been in prison except her story wasn't solid enough to go to court so the guy gets out. Meanwhile, he's lost his job as an attorney, possibly his license, his home, and car, and all his worldly goods. Still, he goes running back to her against his attorney's advice with no obvious resentment of any kind - just sweet, and loving and patient. She, on the other hand, is on and off. She's has a legal order to keep him away, then she cancels it. She's constantly hot and wants him to take her to bed, or cold and ordering him out of her life. She takes no sensible advice from anyone. None of the women in the story do - they are foolish people every step of the way.

Acts of Mercy: A Mercy Street Novel (Mercy Street Foundation Series)
Review Date: 10/14/2021

The Mercy Street Foundation was founded by the billionaire, Robert Magellan, his cousin Father Kevin Burch and former detective Mallory Russo. The goal of the foundation is to look into cold cases that the various police departments have run out of leads on. They do this at no cost to anyone.
The foundation is still in the process of staffing all the positions. When the application of a former FBI profiler comes across Mallory's desk, she jumps on the opportunity to interview him and they all agree to hire him.

Sam's first case is the murder of a husband and father, an all around good guy that was found behind the center he and his wife volunteered at feeding the homeless. All leads have been followed, and the case has gone cold. The detective working the case mentions that an agent with the FBI has looked into the case in connection with one she is working on. Cold cases are their specialty.

In a side story, Robert has been searching for his wife and infant son as they've been missing for fifteen months. .
This series so far only has the three "Mercy" books. But it is part of her FBI series. It can be read as a stand alone book.

This book may leave the reader thinking about what our stellar neighbors might be like. In this version they are good and bad, which is logical and transcends the stereotype that implies they would be one or the other.

Vampire noir. There's a shambler on the loose. Some fool who got himself infected with a flesh-eating bacteria is lurching around, trying to munch on folks' brains. Joe hates shamblers, but he's still the one who has to deal with them. That's just the kind of life he has. Except afterlife might be better word.

This is the second book about Mercy Hollings. Sukey and Sam are still around and Mercy is still beating herself up about things. A great plot, you know what Mercy is going to do, but it's the getting there that is interesting. She's still trying to figure out what she really is. a lot of the story is concerned with Mercy trying to help out at a battered woman's refuge and how once again her use of the 'gift' has unforeseen consequences.

I like Alafair's writing. Her main character is feminine, yet smart and tough. She believes in her hunches, although she doesn't always act on them immediately. In this story women are being murdered and she, a new and female addition to the crime detective squad, has not proven herself to the Dept. With this case she not only proves herself, but rescues her boss. Good story with positive vibes

Anything But Typical (Audio CD) (Unabridged)

I've read a few books on autism and this is easy to read and offers one of the most accurate insights into what it feels like to have autism (in my opinion). It also describes a parent-child relationship from the perspective of the child with autism, which I think many parents would find useful. It describes clearly how situations of (what appears to be) disruptive behaviour in school arise. Would recommend it for children from about year 6 onwards, parents, and professionals.

Sometime in the past - before 9/11/01 - the world changed. Magic appeared in the world; guns and internal combustion engines stopped working.

Life in the post-Change world is nasty, brutal and short. Pete has been wandering since the world changed. The one thing that made life livable for him was meeting Ariel, a unicorn. Ariel and Pete become "familiars" with a bond and loyalty to each other. However, because Ariel is a unicorn, Pete has to remain a virgin, which periodically causes tension.

In their wandering, we see what life in the post-Change world is like. Society is starting to feudalize. Unicorn horns are a source of magic. A necromancer is beginning to create a power base in New York, and Ariel and Pete are right in the center of an assault on the Empire State Building.

Assassin (Alexander Hawke, Bk 2) (Audio CD) (Abridged)
Review Date: 9/15/2024

Bell created some particularly vicious villains this time out, sumo-sized, murderous Arab scumbag Snay bin Wazir leading the pack. His minions are a team of deadly, beautiful female assassins who carry out his orders around the world. Commanded by his even scarier father-in-law, the reclusive Emir, bin Wazir sets a plan in motion that could decimate the population of not only the United States, but the world. It's up to Alex Hawke to get to bin Wazir in time to stop the destruction.

Things cruise along nicely for about the first three quarters of the book, moving the focus of the action from Alex and his team, Stoke and his pursuit of Vicky's killer, and bin Wazir and his cronies as they hatch their deadly schemes. Stoke's part of the story wraps up far too soon, however, Stoke being the tastiest spice in the stew. The action scenes for Alex's big showdown needed a little oomph, too, as if they were written a little too carefully rather than in the heat of excitement. The denouement also drags on a few pages longer than it should, taking a bit too much time getting to the obvious. These complaints are minor, however, and detract very little from the overall quality of the book.

This is a story about ballet It is about the sometimes cut-throat world of ballet; the corps de ballet, the soloists, those who aspire to reach to the top. It is also about love, between friends, families and self. How love can grow despite less than ideal beginnings. There are many things this book is about, but the best thing is reading it. Enjoy!
