A fascinating look at how perilous our fragile nation was in its beginning. The direct quotes of that era took some interpretation to comprehend, given how English has evolved since then. )I tended to skip over them about half way through the book.) Also, I was expecting to read more about the finish of the war, but this book is literally about the one year of its title.

Accounts of Washington in his later years are not too flattering, so it was great to read what a leader he was during his prime.

Brown v. Board of Education : A Brief History with Documents (The Bedford Series in History and Culture)
Review Date: 4/30/2016

A good summary, in text book style, of the cases and issues that led up to and caused the historic court case. Most of the book is opinions written on earlier cases. Not a fun reading, but good history.

Good basic information about goldfish.

The Last Undercover: The True Story of an FBI Agent's Dangerous Dance with Evil
Review Date: 7/16/2016

Interesting look at undercover police life. Main thread is about a man loving boys group. Not a cliff hanger but an unusual look into men with evil intent and how law enforcement goes about building a case against them.

Moneyball has been out for a while but was fascinating to read how technology put a poorly funded team in the thick of competition. Traditional baseball believed in fit players that "look" like pros, but good stats proved that others could be better and were under priced. Using stats, there are a lot of traditional baseball practices that seem wrong, like stealing bases, bunting, and paying for a closer.

The reasons for questioning traditional baseball wisdom is much better explained in the book than in the movie. If you follow baseball, the book is a great read.

I heard this author is the Norwegian version of Larsson (the Girl with the...), but was not as enthralling. I think some of the reason is the translation. There are a lot of words that I could only guess the meaning of, based on the context.

Otherwise, was a good mystery, but not as good as the writing of my most popular mystery writers (Balducci, Grisham, etc).

The Okinawa Program : How the World's Longest-Lived People Achieve Everlasting Health--And How You Can Too
Review Date: 9/21/2011

Being an aging baby boomer, I found the research and info on living a long and healthy life very eye opening. Okinawans live longer than any other group. Following their diets and lifestyles certainly can help us live longer and healthier.

Don't know how well I can change completely, but I am using a rice and steam cooker, eating vegetables, and cooking stir fry. It is an impressive book that can lead to so many changes!

Good overview of options and locations to visit. Nothing incredibly insightful but a good orientation for the less experienced.

Second Suns: Two Doctors and Their Amazing Quest to Restore Sight and Save Lives
Review Date: 5/26/2018

This story tells the amazing accomplishments of two dissimilar doctors. There is nothing that compares to the quick results of cataract surgery, where the patient not only recovers, but has the best sight of his or her life, the next day!

Now, think about bringing those miracles to the poorest areas of the world, and being the doctors that found their purpose there. The book mentions that there may be no one on earth doing more good, and it is a legitimate claim.

The story takes on a little more interest when I found out that the author, who wrote so impactful about the good works of these doctors, took his own life in his 50's.

Setting Up a Freshwater Aquarium : An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet

"True Grit" is an easy read and entertaining. It is about a young girl looking for gritty men to help her in a man's, western world, but she ends up showing the grit too.

If you have seen the movie, it follows the book closely, though Glen Campbell's character is a lot stronger than Campbell was capable of in the movie.

Someone said it was their favorite book; I wouldn't go that far but certainly enjoyed reading. It is not long and hard to put down.

This is a groundbreaking book about How the Bible has been misused to support bigotry . An objective look at the book reflects that there is nothing objectionable about alternatives like LGBT. A great read exposing 1,000 years of misinformation.
