How can anyone describe this book? It isn't a parable, a fairy story, or a poem, but rather a mixture of all three. It is beautiful and it is comic. It is philosophical and it is cheery. What we suppose we are trying fumblingly to say is, in a word, that it is Thurber.
There are only a few reasons why everybody has always wanted to read this kind of story, but they are basic:
Everybody has always wanted to love a Princess.
Everybody has always wanted to be a Prince.
Everybody has always wanted the wicked Duke to be punished.
Everybody has always wanted to live happily ever after.
Too little of this kind of thing is going on in the world today. But all of it is going on valorously in The 13 Clocks.

We never should have done it. But we needed a break. You know, some time off from the superhero stuff. A chance to act like normal kids. Well--as normal as four kids who can morph, a hawk, and an alien can be. Everything should have been cool.
Now Rachel is missing. And there's this...this thing that's after us. But it's not up to me to tell the whole story. Tobias, Cassie, Marco, and Ax were there, too. Even Rachel has some info to add. So go ahead and check this out. And remember not to tell anyone what we're about to tell you. It could mean the difference between life and death....

When Marco runs into his old friend Erek he doesn't think too much of it. He's got a couple of more important things to do. Like helping to save the world. But then Marco finds out Erek's been hanging with the kids at The Sharing. And he starts to think that something just a little weird is going on.
So Marco, Jake, and Ax decide to morph and check old Erek out. Just to see if he's been infested with a Yeerk. The good news is that Erek's not a human-Controller. The bad news is that Erek's not even human....

"Go, Craig! Go, Craig!" Amy chanted, urging me on.
I lowered my hands to the coffin lid. The wood felt cool and smooth, my heart pounded so hard, I could barely breathe.
It's no big deal. A coffin is just a big wooden box.
It's no different from lying down on a bed.
I took a deep breath. Pushed with all my strength.
The coffin lid slid open. I gazed inside--and started to scream.

The fog shimmered up over the dark grass, over the bent, scraggly trees. Covering the hill, covering the old graveyard.
And then I heard the horrifying moan. Through the windowpane, I heard a long, low moan floating from the hill.
Human and animal at the same time.
So cold. So sad.
So near...

From salsa dancing in a rum-induced haze and struggling to exercise in Colombia ("the guerillas were using the track again today"), to crossing international borders unconventionally and dodging bombs in Lebanon ("the good news was that they were 'small bombs'"), Wendy somehow manages to find herself in the midst of hysterical, adventurous, and often illegal situations. Case in poing--every time she heads to Costa Rica, she is forced to visit another prison. Although a jail may not be everyone's idea of a place to find a date, Wendy soon falls in love with a man, a country, and its people and risks everything she has to clear his name.
Avoiding Prison and Other Noble Vacation Goals is a bumpy and hilarious ride in which Wendy discovers that a successful vacation--much like that elusive thing,happiness--can be found in some of the most unlikely places imaginable.

Mallory said goodbye to the glamorous life.
Being an international model had lost its appeal. She wanted only to go home--to Avalon, the family farm in Australia. Then she discovered, if she wanted to stay there, she'd have to manage the place on her own.
But, there was a major obstacle: Bren Dalton, the insolent representative of the corporation who owned the farm. He refused her application on the grounds that as a woman she was not capable of real managemant responsibility.
His arrogant assumptions made Mallory furious, but she was certain she could change his mind....

He was being overprotective...
Maura was determined to strike out on her own. Her decision to teach school enraged Clayton, her stepbrother, and the administrator of the family's considerable wealth.
Ten years older than Maura, Clayton had always shared an affectioinate relationship with her. He'd respected her intelligence and recognized her independent spirit.
But now his affection was eclipsed by fury, and Maura was at a loss to understand why.
One thing was becoming increasingly obvious. His feelings went beyond brotherly protectiveness and affection....

Carefully, the alien poured the purple liquid into the bottle. "Our only supply of Brain Energizer Fluid," he muttered. "Let's hope it works."
"Hurry, Morggul," he said, giving his fat partner a push with all four tentacles.
Morggul gazed at the purple bottle. His lower mouth frowned. His upper mouth said, "No human has ever drunk this formula. How do we know what side effects it will have? Maybe it will kill them!"
