This book is different from most of the other Jojo Moyes books I've read. This one is set in the 1930's in the mountains of Kentucky. A group of women with very different backgrounds unite to to form a traveling library. In spite the women's differences, they become friends and support each other during some tough situations while struggling to keep the library open. This book reminded me of the bookmobile that used to come to my neighborhood in the summer when I was a child. I was so excited to go in and choose books.

This is a story about the bond between sisters. The bond remains strong through the highs and lows of life. The story touches on Mary's childhood, but it mainly takes place during Mary's marriage to Lincoln and the years after his death. I enjoyed this book, but it took me awhile to get all the sisters figured out. Several sisters narrate the story.

I loved this book and didn't want it to end! The author was a very likeable character and I enjoyed some of her humorous experiences, events of 1945, and references to living in Iowa. The author did a great job of giving the feel of the saddness and worry of wartime as well as the joys of growing up and gaining independence. I highly recommend this book.

Philippa Gregory was an author recommended by a family member. So, I was pleased to win Tidelands through a Goodreads giveaway. Tidelands takes place in 1648 England during England's Civil War. Alinor, the main character, is a strong ambitious mother of 2. She lives in poverty, but works very hard to provide a better life for her children. Her neighbors on the island are suspicious of her beaut, skills as a midwife, and her use of herbs for healing. There is some romance, but the man does not come in and save the day like a typical romance. This story points out how little power and control woman had at this time in history. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. (Dark Tides)

The book started a little slow as the author was setting the scene. But as more details were revealed about Anna, my interested increased. There were several surprises.
