This book combines history and storytelling in a thrilling way. I loved learning about Aethelflaed and relating her adventures to my own daughters. I had never heard of her before, I'm so glad Rebecca Tingle chose to bring her to life in this well written novel.

Barbara Kingsolver is one of the best storytellers around. She crafts sentences and observations on life that have stuck in my head for over ten years since I first read this book. This story is interesting, unpredictable with quirky characters she brings you to love.

This is the first long book that my five year old has let me read aloud to her without getting bored. She got so engrossed in the story she even picked it up and re-read chapters on her own.

This series is a great introduction to the Little House series. Even my older daughter who has read all of the Little House books treasures these picture books for their gentle and beautiful illustrations.

Very inspiring. Some of the ideas are dated, but I came away with not only some useful specifics, but a great general idea of how to live more frugally.

Every parent and child should read this classic. The characters are so well developed you would recognize any of them instantly if you met them on the street, and the underlying theme, that children learn by doing, by being given real responsibility and work, is one sorely needed today.

Well written and inspiring story of a young pioneering couple with grit and determination. I especially admired how courageous the young wife was when faced with spending the winter alone while her husband went elsewhere for work. Well worth reading.
