Very informative about what was happening politically and culturally during this time in Charleston as well as very descriptive about how domestic life of old families was lived. The characters are fascinating and varied.

He is a man of integrity who does not know he is living a lie, an Anglican monk who was once a husband and father. He is compassionate and ruthless, deeply spiritual, immensely attractive, and he is gifted-and burdened- with "glamorous" psychic powers.
The time is 1940. Suddenly Jonathan Darrow, in the midst of a successful career in the Church of England, receives a shattering vision and knows he must leave the monastery which has been his home for 17 years. But he knows too that once he leaves this stage where he has painfully managed to triumph over his weakneses, his lethal pride and ambition could well revive to lead him dangerously astray. He plunges into a spitiual crisis of such profundity that the lives of those closest to him hang in the balance.

Mystery is so rich and masterfully plotted and constructed, and so entertaining that it would be unfair to reveal the story. Here we have a mystery of astonishing complexity and depth with an astonishing solution and breathtaking climax. We also have three-dimensional characters , a moving love story, and a wonderful evocation of the milieu of the very rich, both in the Caribbean and in Wisconsin. The author is not only investigating two fictional crimes, he is also after the greatest mystery of all: the mystery of life and death.

I enjoyed reading this book. I never expected to learn so much about lavender and now wish to see these fields in bloom.
