This book is an encouraging look at how situations that look hopeless can be turned around.

This is an abridged version of the book meant for younger readers, ages 8-12.The original one was wonderful.

While the original 110 rules were wonderful, the modern renditions lost a LOT in the translation. They were REALLY dumbed-down. I will be looking for a copy of the originals without the mindless mumbo-jumbo...

While this is a great resource for new homeschoolers, it did seem slanted towards a relaxed or unschooling approach. You would be wise to balance that with a good look at some of the other methods before deciding which is the best approach for your family.

This was a wonderful, well-written story by a very talented writer! I will be looking for more of her books.
She made each of these characters seem so real. I wanted to adopt Sophie too, and mother Cathy. We could all use a best friend like Leigh. Not to mention a love like Hosea... (or in-laws like his parents.)
A great example of God's love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness!

This is a wonderful book! It is full of ideas on how to "think outside the box" and teach subjects with novel approaches. This book saved my sanity during my second year of HSing my ADD, disgraphic, possibly Asperger Syndrome child. (Unfortunately, I lent it out the next year...)
She constantly reminds us to look for the gift in this child, and to consider all the wonderful ways that God can use the very traits that may be SO frustrating to them, and us, right now.
Carol is an awesome speaker and has wonderful ideas on her website SizzleBop.com. Don't miss the story of how that name came to be, and join her email list!

Overall, not a bad job for such a little book.
One thing did bother me. All of the models kept the same expression, no matter what they were signing.
In ASL the same two sign phrase "YOU WALK" can be a statement, a command, or a question - depending on the inflection given it by the signer's facial expression. Look in the mirror and say it each way. Your natural facial expressions will change too.
The book shows it as a question "Can you walk?" but the face shows that it is a statement. Try saying those same 3 words without a change in your vocal inflection...

Most of the people in this book, as with most works of fiction, are created in the author's imagination.
It is with great interest that I learn such is not the case with author Mari Sandoz and her pioneer father, "Old Jules". I am looking forward to reading the books that she has written!
