Wonderfully done version of his masterpiece. Enjoyable just listening and even better following the text.

Eclipse (Audio CD) (Unabridged)
Review Date: 7/21/2009

The story is compelling. Though fictional, it conveys an underlying truth, the horrible conditions under which millions live and the wanton disregard of the rest of the world. The characters are skillfully developed and the unthinkable and unbelievable becomes thinkable and believable.

The story is true, and some of it interesting. However, those who expect the emotional power and impact of his first book will be quite disappointed. The facts of the illegal killings of the flyboys could have been told in a few pages. In a war in which millions were murdered, by Germans and Japanese, this tragedy was just that, an all too common event. Disclosing the further treatment of the bodies to the families was at best, cruel.
For those who wish to really understand the nature of the Japanese occupational forces, I recommend the Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang.

Garden of Beasts : A Novel of Berlin 1936 (Audio CD) (Abridged)
Review Date: 11/16/2009

The main character is flawed, which is his strength. The plot is ambitious, but draws the reader in. The twists and surprises are believable and welcome. A really great read, involving traditional evil pitted against even greater forms of evil, ending in personal redemption.

Very well written fiction based in history. The twists are realistic and the characters are believable. A lot of apparent extraneous detail becomes important as the story progresses. A fun read.

The Gospel According to Judas by Benjamin Iscariot
Review Date: 7/29/2009

A fascinating book which is quite consistent with the four gospels, except for its defense of Judas. I determined it was worth reading when I discovered that it is read by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It is surprising that this fact is not noted on the site.

In Secret Service (Audio CD) (Abridged)

A very compelling bit of historical fiction, told quite credidibly.

The Janson Directive (Paul Janson, Bk 1) (Audio CD) (Unabridged)

Classic Ludlum. Released after his death, but his touch is obvious. Surprising plot twists with a hero who is not quite a superman.

A nice change of pace. Justice triumphs without a super-hero. Just integrity, risk and good luck.

Very insightful view of the corporate sales life, spiced with a deliciously evil provocateur (sp?). At times, one almost thinks the good guy will get it in the neck.

A well written portrayal of the actions of the CIA in supporting the Afghan rebellion in the 90's and, more importantly, the mindset that gave rise to that support.

Maybe one of the best books since the Spy Who Came In From the Cold. A skillfully woven tail of deceit, corruption and injustice. Very well read.

Very unusual writing and a captivating plot.

The Saboteurs (Men at War, Bk 5) (Audio CD) (Abridged)

An excellent balance of two plots, German Saboteurs in the United States and a mission to rescus a German scientist from Sicily. No superheroes; just some heroic action.

One of the most engrossing novels I have ever read. The pathos and tragedy of the history setting seems to drive the "innocent" people to even more pathetic actions. More approachable by far than Satanic Verse, and more powerful because the characters are so real.

Simple Genius (King and Maxwell, Bk 3) (Audio CD) (Abridged)

By far not one of his bess books. Too predictable at ever turn.

The Poetry of Robert Service ranges from excellent to amazing. The imagery is vivid and nuanced. While describing scenes and events, he carries the reader into the psyche and sole of the characters and narrators.

One of his better stories, told quite believably. One I had to finish once I had stared it.
