Disturbing, but real. This diary follows the demise of a teenage girl, when she enters into the dangerous world of drug abuse. Sometimes hard to read, but very powerful.

Much of this book revolves around how two pre-teen sisters are growing up and coping with a war haunted father and an emotionally unattached mother. The book is sometimes surreal, drawing the reader into the imagination of the sisters as they make the emotional and physical transition from children to teenagers. There are some scenes containing sexual or violent content.

Augusten Burroughs' childhood was so incredibly unusual and bazaar. It's an entertaining read, but not for the faint of heart. I also agree with a previous comment...this book is a lot funnier if you have previous knowledge of mental illness or are familiar with the field of psychology. I was laughing out loud at some of the wacky psychology-related conversations in the book.

Caroline Kettlewell offers a more analytical approach to her struggles. She dwells on the question of "why" she cuts more than anything. Pretty good writing, though.

Through Jeffrey Eugenides' fantastic writing, I was completely drawn into the account of the demise of the Lisbon family. I could not put this book down. The language in this book is beautiful and haunting. Though be warned, the book does contain some sexual or violent content.

This novel follows Astrid's journey through a series of foster homes while her mother is imprisoned. Each foster home is unique and disturbing in a different way. We experience the physical and emotional changes that Astrid endures. The language of Janet Fitch's writing is beautiful and intriguing. An incredible read, much better than the movie.
