I'm usually involved with reading mysteries, but diverged to this book via forum reviews. It was okay; light reading. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend spending your time reading it, with the kazillion other books to choose from in the world!

Have you read other Fannie Flagg books? They are a pleasure & draw the reader into a mid-Western town, in this case, brimming w/a variety of people, jobs, habits, etc. The main character, an elderly, very independent woman is well known to all as a friendly, helpful person, ready to help any & everyone.
You'll meet her neighbors, her niece, the woman reporter at the local newspaper office and many others along the way. Everything has happened for a reason in the elderly woman's life but she feels it is time to be in the bliss of heaven. The humanity and humor make this novel one you will remember!

Super, timeless story! I like Dickens' minute descriptions of everything & everyone. The moral of the story is wonderful -- to spread your love and kindness with all now for tomorrow is an unknown. As Scrooge saw, his trip to the future showed his isolation, with no friends or family. He had time in his reality to change his course in life. We can learn a lot from this classic.

This was a fun read, especially since it was based in San Francisco, my hometown. It was fun to read of the neighborhoods, hotels, and the fog. I thought it took long to handle all the characters in the 2nd third of the book, but maybe I was simply tired the nights I read it. The rich couple, the St. Georges, are ringers for Nick & Nora Charles. They provided a well-heeled ambience & sophistication in The City by the Bay.

My daughter had borrowed about 15 books from her local library so she could read them to her 5 yr.old daughter & 3 3/4 yr. old son. I happened to read one to my grandson & we loved it! Laughed & laughed! I asked him questions what he thought this bizarre family would do on the next page, with, for example, the information that Mommy Bunny was going to stuff a turkey, or what they really meant when they said they'd take their bicycles to the beach. They misuse so much of the English language, with hilarious results. I read 2 more of them, at that time, to both grandchildren. Oh, my, the house seemed to shake with laughter! These books are a wonderful way to start them thinking about the meaning of words, and how to connect words in order to convey the needed meaning. I HAD to order this book so they could permanently chuckle anytime they wanted to do so.

This book is very suspenseful & the list of possible suspects of a double murder kept me interested the entire time. The various characters were mostly from the mid-West and had moved to New York City. They made new friends but still spent a lot of time together, so the list of suspects is about 6-8, which kept the police busy. The main character is a very engaging woman who works at the main library and who likes to trust people. This does put her in harms way, and I cheered for her the whole length of the novel. The settings and characters held my interest, as I think it would for you too.

Great news! I've read all Fannie Flagg's books! They were all "page turners". They contain drama, danger, wry humor, & witty Southern observations. There is whimsey, wonder, & lessons about people's motives & ethics. I truly cannot fathom you not enjoying any of her books! Have a great time & read any, & possibly, all of her novels.

The PM of England learns he is very out-of-touch w/his country men & women. The solution? Dress in disguise as a woman to explore the country & talk w/a variety of people. He is accompanied by Jack, a policeman, who is always stationed at the entrance to #10 Downing St. Many wry situations arise during their journeys. Solutions will need initiation by the PM & the Houses of govt. as they learn of their dysfunctional past decisions. There are amusing moments on every page.
Behind closed doors, we encounter both Jack's and the Prime Minister's strange families as sub plots. Hilarity and social comments abound which make this book one you will enjoy immensely!

I like this author so much! Learn of the duplicity of the newly deceased "husband", how his significant other & their 3 daughters handle their world turning upside down. Great character development and interactions throughout this well written novel. Their new reality evolves in interesting ways & they all have to re-evaluate their relationships w/each other, AND w/the 1st, legal wife & grown son who were left behind. You won't regret reading this psychological drama. Enjoy!

With my half Irish background, this book's Ireland setting and interesting rural people, was an interesting read.
His style was very descriptive down to every detail, in a way Dickensian. I admired that and enjoyed his writing. Near the end of the book, fanciful events occur which I thought far-fetched but the conclusion for the main characters was very satisfactory.

The basic story line of this book is different & appealing. Many of us have been divorced & can recall the process, even in a fairly mild experience. Her post-divorce change of location away from the suburbs to a small apartment in a mediocre section of London has a wealth of situations that arise. Her journals, so truthfully following her stream-of-consciousness, makes for very interesting reading. I would have given the review 5 stars, but the ending, though workable, was a bit difficult for me to fully accept.

Various people in the town become known to us via their interactions w/the local vicar & his new wife. The beauty of people helping each other, young to old, keeps you involved right to the end.
