Once you visit the charming village of Acorn Hill, Pennsylvania, you'll never want to leave. Townsfolk relax on their porch swings or gather to discuss the day's events at the Coffee Shop over homemade pie. It's the kind of town where friendship and faith flow together like a wide river on a fine spring day.
However, this sleepy town is in for quite a surprise. After Daniel Howard, the adored minister of Grace Chapel, passes away, his 3 spirited daughters come home to remember their father. That's when they discover that each has inherited a share of his run-down Victorian house. Each sister has a different dream for its future and the squabbling begins..but from it emerges a brilliant solution. Grace Chapel Inn--a unique bed and breakfast--is born, and a new life begins for them all.
This is the first in the Guidepoasts' "Tales from Grace Chapel Inn" and once you meet these sisters and "visit" their town, you'll want to come back again and again as you discover all the other books in the series! Heartwarming and inspiring!

Despite the overwhelmingly negative review given by a PBS reader, I gave this book a try and found that just as in all of my previous experiences with Lisa Scottoline books, I couldn't put this one down. The story pace is rapid and the characters so believable that you will want to stand up and cheer for the heroine and give a comforting hug to the little boy whose life has been so disrupted. The information about the court system in regard to an orphaned child was presented in a way that was very enlightening but did not detract from the pace of the story. The twists and turns kept me riveted from the inviting beginning through to the satisfying ending. Five stars and then some! (Actually, after finishing this book and re-reading the previous review, I have my doubts that the reviewer even read "the last five chapters!")

From back of book: Maritime insurance investigation is Killinger's beat, and high living is his downfall. He charges exorbitant fees and spends it lufing beautiful women, keeping a Japanese houseboy, and harboring a Chinese junk in quiet Santa Barbara.
When Ejnar Mylius, owner of one of the great shipping fleets, loses a contest with the sea, Killinger is called in to assess the damage. But some very important people are also very interested. They come from Singapore, from Calcutta, from Sao Paulo. The come to inspect the cargo, and to kill, if necessary.
They make Killinger very nervous.
Gritty...fast paced...action packed!

In 1952 writer Lillian Hellman refused to name other people--although whe offered to talk about herself--before the House Un-American Activities Committee. For this singular act of moral courage she paid dearly. Blacklisted, forced to sell her home, she watched as others sacrificed friends to save their careers. Now Lillian Hellman names names as she writes her most intimate, painful and moving memoir--her personal history of an unfortunate era. "Scoundrel Time" is an intensely personal account of a great lady's refusal to compromise herself for personal profit. It is a private record of a public time told by an impressive woman in a powerful way!

One of the most moving books I have ever read! The author certainly did her research well. She gives us a painful but true look at practices in mental hospitals in the past and uses real places and events along with believable characters to touch our hearts in a story that I will be thinking about long after I have finished reading it! Five stars!

This book is one of the Mouse Books designed to excite a child's imagination, develop verbal skills and foster an interest in reading. Each page features a delightful illustration of "Mouse" and his adventure with the wind, and because it has no words, allows a child to create a story while practicing basic learning skills.
