The 1,000 most important people (as determined by the authors, you can debate their conclusions youself!) of the last millennium with a little blurb about each, and cross-referenced. Would be great to read one a day with schoolchildren as a look at all kinds of figures (philosophers, statesmen, inventors, explorers, artists, peacemakers, you name it!) from the past thousand years.

"You asked for it: fresh, innovative, and extra-simple recipes that shave meal preparation to mere minutes. The recipes in '20-Minute Super Suppers' count on easy-to-find produce, so they pack a bonus of healthful eating along with exciting flavors that will entice your family back to the dinner table night after night." (From the back cover)
I didn't personally think that all these recipes were 'simple,' as some needed quite a few ingredients, but if you have good cooking skills and want something different than cream of mushroom soup dumped over a London Broil in a crock pot, this book does have very contemporary cuisine ranging from meats to seafood, pizza to pasta. Fans of "Better Homes and Gardens" will enjoy this recipe collection, published in 1998.

Like the title says, 365 fast recipes. Nice hardcover edition with spiral binding inside so book stays open flat on the counter while you cook. Chapters include Soups, Stews, and Chilies; Substantial Salads; Pasta Presto; Variety with Vegetables, Rice, and Grains; Fish and Shellfish in a Flash; Poultry Pronto; Meat in Minutes; Divine Desserts. Beverly Cox has a lot of great cookbooks out and this one is sure to be helpful to many time-pressed people. Published in 1995 so there are no Jell-O mold recipes or anything like that!

Robert Klein's reflections on life between the ages of nine and twenty-five. Only three stars because I got tired of hearing about his sexual escapades, and the last 1/4 started to get boring. It's funny-- Robert Klein is my favorite comedian, but this book made me like him less, which I never expected. I try to remind myself that he grew up in the sixties when drugs and sex were rampant, but I feel a bit put-off about him regardless. Also disappointing was that some of the jokes were taken word-for-word from past comedy routines. He must have known that the majority of his readers would be fans of his work... when he started to tell jokes I was familiar with, I would groan to myself that in books you can't "stop me if you've heard this one." Despite that, the book was a mainly interesting read about growing up in the Bronx. My father was born and grew up in Jersey City around the same time, and it amused me to think of his teenage years being similar to the people described in the book. Just don't expect a hilarious read a la Dave Barry, and you should enjoy it if you are a fan of this time-tested comedian.

Small hardcover book would make a nice gift, or keep it as a reference for herb basics and a few recipes.

Beautiful book packed with pictures of lush Asian spas. Soothing just to look at the colorful scenery and treatments. Contains recipes and directions for body treatments, hair conditioners, special mixtures for the face, and a short chapter on spa cuisines. Some of the components for the rubs and facials would have to be purchased in a specialty store, others are found at any grocery store. A great book for a little personal pampering and relaxation.

Strange graphic novel mystery story, a parade of images that make sense once the story ends... the kind of book you have to read more than once to fully understand and appreciate. Unique drawing style.

This book has recipes for over 100 kinds of breads in both 1 and 1 1/2 pound loaf sizes. Learn to make all kinds of healthy wheat breads, pumpkin bread, cinnamon rolls, bagels, banana walnut breads, breadsticks, dinner rolls, and much more. Recipes are formulated for bread machine use, but I don't see why you couldn't make them by hand if you wanted to. There is even a chapter teaching you to make healthy and delicious spreads to use on bread in place of butter.

Very well done, but the concept gets a bit boring after the first dozen or so pages. The image from outside is projected into the room, upside down, through a window using a "pinhole camera." So you get room after room, maybe a conference room with a picture of the city on the wall, or a bedroom with the brick building across the street. The photographer is obviously very talented, I just didn't think the concept was strong enough to carry an entire book. Glad I got this from the library and didn't use a credit. Plus it is huge, it would have probably cost more than four dollars for someone to mail.

I couldn't get very far into this at all... picked it up at a book sale thinking I'd try it since I never read anything by Anne Rice, but wow... it was just brutal and revolting. If you don't believe me, feel free to give it a go, but I warned ya!
