This book was terrible. How it was a Hugo nominee, I will never understand!
Elementary writing with numerous errors and inconsistencies, peppered with pop slang and shock lines to seem thrilling, cool, or hip but failing completely; the attempts are vain and unnecessary. The first three quarters of the book are a slog, but have a slight air of familiarity only because you've probably read something similar before. The worst part is the ending-- that you're strung along to get to only to address an interaction at the start of the tale THAT GETS THE WORST PAYOFF EVER AFTER 300 PAGES-- with no great denouement other than the two main characters were destined for each other (duh) in order to change the world in ways you'll never see. So disappointing.
In short, do not read All the Birds in the Sky. The book does not do its award nomination justice.

This is the only book of the Borg War Trilogy worth reading and it was fantastic!! I was overwhelmingly impressed by this book both in writing style and story line since I have been equally un-moved by other Trek novels.
This is a definite read!!!

As a Vonnegut fan, this is not his best work. Then again, it just may be my taste in fiction. As far as Vonnegut's books go, I prefer Sirens of Titan... give that one a try instead!

This book was un-necessary. It was mediocrely written and the ending was anticlimatic. As I stated in a review for the other books in this trilogy, the second one (Before Dishonor) is by far the best. However, seeing Picard's future was interesting, but hardly worth the first 300 pages of the novel to learn.

The story and the art both wowed me from the start, but I found the ending a bit lacking-- too easily resolved (so to speak) and without much explanation. Overall, however, I'm hooked! The bait for the next installment is definitely a lure, but as I stated earlier: this book had me from the first few pages. I look forward to more, hopefully soon!

While the idea behind the story was sound (not entirely thrilling or fully developed, but conceptually interesting), I found the writing to be entirely too elementary for my liking and that seriously destracted me from truly enjoying this tale.
We all know the borg is the best villain for TNG and anyone willing to enough to pick up a Star Trek novel and, moreover, general events leading up to what happens in this book (i.e., the movies) are already common knowledge. So, not only is the simple writing annoying to read, but parts of the story feel like filler or a lame attempt at character and/or story development. Ugh!
I strongly recommend you pick up the second book in this series: Before Dishonor (Borg War, Bk 2), written by Peter David. It's has a much better plot, more interesting pacing, and highly superior writing to that of Dillard's. Additionally (and thankfully), you don't even need to read this first novel in the series (of three) to pick up the second and still enjoy the story.
In short, pass on this book.

Nowhere near as funny or as smart as the show.

Meh. The main reason I was invested from the start was purely nostalgia, but the writing was basic and the story moved towards a slow, expected climax... that ended only in promoting an obvious sequel.
The only quality to the book was the description of the various Gelfling tribes-- which was new to me.

I must say that while I found the whole story an interesting read, the book scored four stars mainly due to the ending of the story-- it is the absolute best ending to any Superman story I have read so far!!
