Ben Belitt, a poet and scholar widely accolaimed for his translation of poetry from the Spanish of Alberti, Machado, Carcia Lorca, Borges and so forth has mapped out some of the terrain which divides and unifies the languages of the world and compels the translator's search for his function. This is a log-book, as well as a casebook on translation.

In an amusing, undemanding read, the co-author of Roadside America reports on 10 "quests" that he undertook in semi-serious search of the elusive essence that may (or may not) be America. The quests include: retracing the route Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper charted in Easy Rider , this time in a Cadillac; kissing 10 of his favorite 1960s TV actresses; visiting the graves of nine famous, or at least interestingly nicknamed, baseball players; perpetrating a hoax in Harper's magazine; working in "the world's largest" McDonald's in Vinita, Okla.; and lobbying for a postage stamp commemorating comedian Freddie Prinze. Although he sometimes tries too hard, readers will find that his half-bewildered, half-belligerent attitude and pleasantly conversational assessments of the quests are worth the trip.

Note this book is not fiction, nor a novelization of the film Casino. Like Wiseguy, it's the real account that Scorsese fashioned into a film (with Pileggi's help again).
Casino tells the story of the Chicago mob's major role in running Las Vegas, how it happened, and how it more or less ended (or appeared to) in the 1980s. Corporations (institutionalized gangsters) took over, and now we're to assume that gambling is a respectable, fine industry. It's hard to cheer for the state 'gaming' officials as they pursue mobsters who are skimming a casino, of all places. A character in the film says it best when he exclaims, 'You mean the money we're robbing is bein' robbed?!'
A good read before or after the excellent film. There's quite a bit of detail as far shady business dealings, politics, and mob bosses go, but less of the nitty gritty mobster detail from Wiseguy.

As a psychic investigator, Shelley Holmes is used to dealing with the supernatural, but her latest case may be her most unusual yet. Beautiful and innocent Lady Arielle Blaylock is haunted by dreams of a golden "lion man," who attempts to seduce her, and lately the lines between her dreams and reality are blurring. Not only has Arielle been waking up with mysterious scratch marks, which eerily resemble those found on the bodies of three women found murdered in Victorian London, but Arielle is also being courted by Luke Simball and Seth Taub, both of who resemble the mysterious lion man of her dreams. Soon Arielle finds herself caught up in a deadly romantic triangle as these two very different men battle for Arielle and her very soul. After triumphing over werewolves and vampires, the redoubtable Miss Holmes returns for her third deliciously entertaining paranormal adventure, and Shannon's potent blend of Egyptian myth, simmering sensuality, subtle wit, and imaginative storytelling will cast a spell of its own.

This finale is definitely more interesting and more action-packed than the last two of the quartet. However, none of the three lives up to the Ender fame.

Quinlan has been on Sally Brainerd's trail since her arms-dealing father, Amory St. John, was murdered. Sally is the key witness, and it's Quinlan's job to bring her in.

John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. His book, Dumbing Us Down, is a treatise against what he believes to be the destructive nature of schooling. Everyone who has something to do with children should read this book: Educators, parents and counselors.

*Starred Review* Writing as Castle, the best-selling Jayne Ann Krentz creates another bewitching story set in the world of Harmony, a future planet of psychics and ghost hunters. If Elly St. Clair knew she was going to need Cooper Boone's help, she might have been nicer when she broke up with him. Instead, furious that Cooper had not only been involved in a duel over her but for all the wrong reasons, Elly gave Cooper back his ring, told him in no uncertain terms they were through, and left Aurora Springs for Cadence City. Then, when her good friend and neighbor Bertha Newell mysteriously disappears in the catacombs, Elly reluctantly admits that she needs the services of a hunter like Cooper. Fortunately, Cooper just happens to be in town, and he offers to help find Bertha. What Elly doesn't know is that Cooper never considered their engagement to be officially terminated. Castle's new futuristic romance brilliantly blends exceptionally entertaining characters, witty prose, and a thrilling paranormal-tinged plot in a sublime novel of romantic suspense. John Charles
