This was interesting to read as a follow-up to Dave Pelzer's books. I am again amazed at how anyone could treat their children with such cruelty, even when mental illness is the issue. However, the lack of protection by the child's community is even harder to imagine. This book exposes the situation that can exist when we see a hurt child, but do not react.

Although fiction, the author seemed to be present during the event and creates an experience similar for the reader. This book fed my fascination for the Donner Party, and I had some difficulty putting it down.

After reading about his early life, I am impressed that he turned into such a responsible adult. It was an enjoyable book to listen to.

I could not put this novel down, once I began it. The characters became real in the pages and I had to learn what they would reveal next.
