Wow. This book recounts what happened to Don Piper while he was "dead" for 90 minutes after grave injury in an auto accident. He vividly recalls, in detail, what he experienced during the hour-and-a-half rescuers worked to resuscitate him. His is truly a glimpse of heaven, told with an incredible eye for detail.

T. Davis Bunn is a fabulous writer. And I really enjoyed this book. Fast-paced, intriging, suspenseful, elixer enters the world of pharmaceutical corporate espionage. The main character, Taylor Knox (known for his surfing abilities), is blackmailed into helping the company founder's family search for the missing heiress to their pharmaceutical empire and fortune. His search takes him all over the world, through surfing communities and monestaries and corporate offices and private yachts, each step drawing him deeper into a web of lethal danger for himself and the woman he seeks. It's a great read.

Not as good as the first two in this series, but still very good, The Finale completes Calvin Miller's The Singer Trilogy (The Singer, The Song, and The Finale). This poetic narrative reads like a tale told by bards long ago and concludes the larger story of the Singer and his Song. Just as CS Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe provides a moving metaphor for the Christian Gospel, so The Singer, The Song, and The Finale do the same. This is a story of incarnation and redemption.

Part of the "Second Chances" series, Never Again Good-bye tells the suspenseful, moving of a woman wanting only to see the child she gave up for adoption and a man trying to protect his child from a would-be stalker. Providing the reader a roller-coaster ride of emotions, this book provides three-dimensional, well written characters, and a story with which readers can identify.

Premonition, part of Ingermanson's "City of God" series, provides another fun, fast-paced exploration of what happens when you look at history with a lens of both science and faith. Set in AD 57 in Jerusalem, it's the story of a modern-era archeologist and her husband trapped in the first century by an errant physics experiment. With no knowledge of how to return to the 21st century, the protaganists (who have full knowledge of events that occur in the 1st century in Jerusalem) seek to make their way through the times and circumstances of a city they know is headed for disaster. Interesting premise. A real page-turner.

For history buffs, this fascinating look at the Great Missippi Flood of 1927 uncovers not only the bad science that led to massive flooding after heavy rains, but the underlying social tensions of the time (racism, politics, high society, etc.) that contributed the severity of the disaster. It's incredible how little Americans know of the history of our country, but this book provides readable insight to the issues of the early 20th-century South. Always interesting, sometimes infuriating, this book will make a history buff out of just about anyone.

Fascinating. Poignant. Astounding. This is the story of a man, blind since he was thirteen years old, who pushes past his limitations to summit Mt. Everest. "Touch the Top of the World" is Erik Weihenmayer's moving momoir of his determination to break through barriers commonly faced by the visually challenged to ultimatly accomplish his dream of climbing the world's highest peaks (something few climbers have done). It's an inspiring read; one I enjoyed and suspect you will, too.

Dryer than I expected it to be, Under the Banner of Heaven is still an interesting non-fiction read. It recounts the story of the brutal murder of a woman and her baby daughter, committed by two brothers who insist God commanded them to kill their victims. In investigating and writing about the crime, Krakauer ends up revealing a darker side of Mormonism - a darker sect of religious folks (not mainstream Mormons) with distorted (and dangerous) views of faith. It's fascinating; just a little more clinical than I expected.
