A realistic story of women, who having lost family members, possessions, and security, along the way, find a way to survive together as they travel westward during the pioneer days of the U.S. They develop their own support system, building trust among each other, and share their resources, building community among themselves. Even so, not all survive. But those who do have a bond of sisterhood that carries them through.
A fascinating story of trials, relationships, adjusting to new ways of life, and more. This was one of those stories that made me want to keep reading.

A good clean romance book. Although in an Amish setting, some of the cultural and religious aspects of the book did not seem truly Amish. But the story itself was good.

This is a moving story based on good historical research. The second in Jane Kirkpatrick's Kinship and Courage series, it continues a story of how the lives of a small group of surviving women settled in California after a harrowing trip westward. Their lives, woven together through what they have gone through, and through continuing dangers and difficulties, make for a dramatic story of persistence, reaching out for help, personal growth, facing dangers, and making decisions that will set their lives in directions for their futures. Parts of the book kept me "on the edge of my seat," and others brought tears. Finishing this book has me greatly anticipating the 3rd book in the series.

An interesting story that made me imagine what it would be like for me if I were in the same situation. A somewhat predictable ending. But I enjoyed the book.

A fun cozy mystery. Kate Hanlon, a minister's wife, delves into another small town mystery - This time to prove her own innocence. She doesn't get much help from the local sheriff. But by asking a lot of questions around town, she fits pieces together - eventually not only solving the mystery, but helping to reunite a teenager with his father.

The Thorn is the first of a three-part series by Beverly Lewis. I enjoyed this, and so many other books written by this author. she researches and gets to know Amish people, and then brings them to life in her novels.
The book is filled with the struggles of an Amish teen who is dealing with problems within her family and trying to help an adopted young man who never seems to fit into Amish life. At the same time, she becomes caught up in being courted by an upstanding young Amish man. But which way will her heart really go?
That question is not answered. That's why I'm reading book 2 now.
