I got this book as we were going on a cross-country trip from new york to oregon and back this summer, so it was nice that the book was organized by state so it made it easy as we passed a state to see any fun stuff we could encounter while crossing it. This book was entertaining to read and some things were a little too freaky for us to go see(like the Testicle festivals). But keep in mind this book is from the year 2000. So if you really want to use it as a guide do not be too disappointed when you go look for something and it is no longer there. the book is outdated and I wish I had a more recent version of it.
Also, it is limited. we were disappointed that many of the "happenings" in the book happened earlier or later in the year, so for a summer vacation, we did not get to experience a lot of things that the book mentioned. So its a fun read but was not really a great travel companion for what we needed.

this was a wonderful book my daughter read in the 5th grade. she loved it because she loves dogs and it warmed her heart to see how this dog could change the life a little girl so much. Then when the movie came out she just had to read the book again after seeing the movie.

Rosemary wells does a great job with this character. little ones will love it as a "Very First Book" and being a Board book it won't get ripped by little hands. durable. and simple.
