From the back cover: "To write or not to write? That is the question. And you've probably always known the answer. Maybe you were drawn to the written word as a reporter for your college newspaper, as a child writing stories to pass a rainy day, after reading a book that changed the way you looked at life, or when admiring-and striving to emulate-the achievements of successful authors, editors, playwrights, columnists, publishers, and countless others. You knew you had to be involved in the world of the written word-and now you'd like to make it a career.
Spanning corporate, nonprofit, and freelance careers, 100 JOBS IN WORDS provides all the basics needed-including brief descriptions of each job, typical salary levels, prospects for finding work, and qualifications and characteristics you should possess-to flourish in a chosen line of work. Along with each entry, there is an insightful profile of a person from each field that describes a typical day on the job and details the steps each took to rise to his or her current position."

From the back cover: "1,001 HEALTH TIPS.
-If you're bothered by mosquitoes in the summer, Vitamin B1 supplements taken orally work as an effective insect repellent.
-Swallowing a tablet is easy with the head tilted backward, but swallowing a capsule that way is difficult, since the capsule is lighter than water and will float forward. If you tilt your head forward, the capsule will float backward for easy swallowing.
-A migraine attack can often be aborted just by exhaling into and rebreathing from a bag placed over the nose and mouth.
-The suffering of asthma can be greatly relieved by eating Cheddar cheese-a natural ingredient in the cheese helps dilate nasal passages.
- When you burn your tongue with hot food or drink, a few grains of sugar sprinkled on the site can sweetly undo the misery.
-Carsickness in a child can often be prevented by elevating the child's riding position by ten inches.
- The pain, burning, and itching of shingles can be greatly relieved by the slight pressure of an elasticized binder worn around the chest.
-Drinking coffee is precisely the wrong thing to do for a hangover, and can actually prolong its effects. Drink fruit juice instead.
-And hundreds more."

The 22 Non-Negotiable Laws of Wellness: Feel, Think, and Live Better Than You Ever Thought Possible
Review Date: 5/20/2012

From the dust jacket: "Webster's dictionary defines wellness as 'the condition of being healthy or sound.' Bestselling author Greg Anderson redefines it as a way of life. Anderson, a passionate health crusader, believes that each person makes the single most powerful contribution to his or her own health-as he discovered for himself following a grim cancer prognosis in 1984 that gave him thirty days to live.
With THE 22 NON-NEGOTIABLE LAWS OF WELLNESS, he has created a survival tool kit for anyone looking to take charge of his or her life. Ranging from the sensible to the unexpected, these principles hold the key to creating better health, a stronger body, and a happier life beginning today."

2nd Chance (Women's Murder Club, Bk 2)
Review Date: 6/6/2006

From back of box: "The sensational killings that have rocked San Francisco appear to be unrelated except in their brutality. But detective Lindsay Boxer senses there's some thread connecting them all. She calls her friends in the Women's Murder Club together to see if they can discover what it is.
Working with CHRONICLE reporter Cindy Thomas, Assistant District Attorney Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, Lindsay discovers that there is indeed a link. Each of the victims had a close relative in a particular profession, a profession that sends a chill through Lindsay's heart.
The partners in the Women's Murder Club deduce where the killer is likely to strike next and bait a trap that can't be resisted. But if their calculation is wrong, the consequences will be lethal. And there will be no second chance."

From the dust jacket: "It begins in the small Iowa town of Steubenville, where a seemingly respectable citizen takes a head-over-heels tumble on a department store escalator. As if on cue, Cadillacs-31 in all-start disappearing from lots in the San Francisco Bay area, as a team of scam artists use phone fraud, bank fraud, and pure criminal genius to do one California bank out of $1.3 million worth of Detroit's finest.
The bank wants those cars back, and turns to Daniel Kearny Associates to get it done. Rock-jawed, relentless Dan Kearny puts his best agents, as well as two new ones, on the case. It doesn't take long for Kearny's team to find out what they're up against: Gyppos. Con artists, scammers, liars, thieves and dangerous charmers, Gypsies are one nation united in street crime. And since the escalator fall has mortally wounded their beloved King, they've decided to get to his funeral in Cadillac style. But there's one more Cadillac to contend with: the shocking pink 1958 Calillac ragtop convertible the dying leader insists on being buried in. The Gypsy who can get his hands on one is sure to be the next King...or Queen."

The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure: How to Lower Your Blood Cholesterol by Up to 40 Percent Without Drugs or Deprivation
Review Date: 3/9/2010

From the dust jacket: "THE 8-WEEK CHOLESTEROL CURE" is a three-pronged approach based on modified diet and special foods and vitamins that actually reduce cholesterol. It works by (1) reducing the amount of fat and cholesterol consumed; (2) increasing the quantity of cholesterol eliminated by the body; and (3) limiting the amount of cholesterol produced by the body. It is a program that says "yes" where others say "no", offering a number of practical suggestions for enjoying a healthy life to the fullest, whether dining out or at home. It is also a very personal story of one man's fight against the nation's number-one killer.
This updated, revised edition includes four new chapters and the most up-to-date information on cholesterol-testing methods; new oatbran products; special considerations for women, children, and the elderly; the importance of HDL cholesterol; exercise; the reversal of heart disease; and more."

Advertising in America: The First Two Hundred Years
Review Date: 11/28/2009

A pictorial history book. Traces advertising (as it says) in the last 200 years. However, in doing so, it also traces style, economic and social changes during the same period, as effective advertising follows all those trends. Narrative in the book is good, but the hundreds of black and white and color pictures are fascinating.

From the rear cover: "In the midst of the vast, windswept Texas plains stood a ranch wrested from the wilderness with blood, sweat and tears. It was the shining legacy of Thomas McBride to his five living heirs. But along with the fertile acres and heads of cattle, each would inherit a history of scandal, lies and hidden lust that threatened to burn out of control.
Lauren McBride had left the Circle M as a confused, lonely girl of fifteen. She returned a woman-beautiful, confident, certain of her own mind. And the last thing she would tolerate was a marriage of convenience, arranged by her pa to right past wrongs. Garret Lassiter had broken her heart once before. Now only a declaration of everlasting love would convince her to become his bride."

From the inside dust jacket cover: "A mob of invisible stowaways making mischief on a World War I freighter, a telepathic man communicating with his unconscious child, a team of astronauts on a mission to a planet that drives men mad...these are the stuff of Sturgeon's stories.
Written between 1939 and 1955, the (14) short stories chosen for ALIEN CARGO represent Sturgeon's finest early work.
'IT', a tale of consummate horror tht Sturgeon says wrote itself...
'POKERFACE', which features a visitor from a future time who gets more than he bargains for in the present.
'BRIGHT SEGMENT', a tale of an isolated inarticulate handyman, the woman who suddenly enters his life, and what he must do to keep her.
'SHADOW, SHADOW ON THE WALL', which delves into a boy's imagination, his shadow pictures, and the things beyond the walls of our homes-and the walls of our minds.
'THE TRAVELING CRAG', wherein a writer, with a little help from his friends of this world and elsewhere, changes his writing and the world."

A book about America, written by a Brit!
Chapter headings: "A Passage to America; The New-Found Land; A Home Away From Home; Making a Revolution; Inventing a Nation; Gone West; A Firebell in the Night; Domesticating a Wilderness; Money on the Land; The Huddled Masses; The Promise Fulfilled-The Promise Broken; The Arsenal; The More Abundant Life".
The first chapter commences an examination of what white man first discovered America and the exploration of America. The final chapter examines modern America, including Las Vegas, communes, and segregation/integration under armed guard.
Many photos, black and white and color and drawings.
The book is an ambitious undertaking. Due to subject matter and length of book, the author had to be selective in topics he covered. However, the wide variety of topics touched on are truly representative of the diversity and complexity that is America.

Review Date: 6/16/2006

From the dust jacket: "Traditional farm life has always focused on the production of a meadow...My own focus is more frequently on the bloom of the thistle, the sunflowers, the daisies flourishing on the fringes...
...readers will discover the surprisingly varied qualities of a 'meadow'...a place of escape, recreation, and small adventure. Whether picking berries and 'weedflowers,' meditating, or dreamily dawdling in one-the meadow is a magic place.
In eleven theme-chapters, readers will enjoy the rich life in all her (the author's) meadows: the pasture lots and 'secret places' of her fruit-farm childhood; the pond meadows, hill meadows, river meadows, and fertile fields of the vegetable farm she works with her husband and sons; the ever broader meadows and vistas of American farmland she visits and shares; the meadows of Bohemia, Austria, and other 'far places' that are part of a modern farmwife's experiences."
