The Best Alternate History Stories of the 20th Century
Review Date: 2/18/2022

mostly enjoyable except the last one. Moon of Ice was just too long. Most of the stories were shorter and I liked them more. I wonder if that's true of more of these stories?

⢠âThe Lucky Strikeâ: When the Lucky Strike is chosen over the Enola Gay to drop the first atomic bomb, fate takes an unexpected turn in Kim Stanley Robinson's gripping tale.
⢠âBring the Jubileeâ: Ward Moore's novella masterpiece offers a rebel victory at Gettysburg which changes the course of the Civil War . . . and all of American history.
⢠âThrough Road No Witherâ: After Hitler's victory in World War II, two Nazi officers confront their destiny in Greg Bear's apocalyptic vision of the future.
⢠âAll the Myriad Waysâ: Murder or suicide, Ambrose Harmon's death leads the police down an infinite number of pathways in Larry Niven's brilliant and defining tale of alternatives and consequences.
⢠âMozart in Mirrorshadesâ: Bruce Sterling and Lewis Shiner explore a terrifying era as the future crashes into the pastâwith disastrous results.

. . . as well as âThe Winterberryâ by Nicholas A. DiChario ⢠âIslands in the Seaâ by Harry Turtledove ⢠âSuppose They Gave a Peaceâ by Susan Shwartz ⢠âManassas, Againâ by Gregory Benford ⢠âDance Band on the Titanicâ by Jack L. Chalker ⢠âEutopiaâ by Poul Anderson ⢠âThe Undiscoveredâ by William Sanders ⢠âThe Death of Captain Futureâ by Allen Steele ⢠and âMoon of Iceâ by Brad Linaweaver

This collection contains the following stories:

Abreaction - I did not read this one because it is also in a to-be-read book.

Largo - I liked this one even though it is similar to other stories I've read. A man writes and performs the ultimate in music.

Like Young - Man has almost died out from a plague and the survivors cannot reproduce. They set about leaving their wisdom for the Next Ones sort of like the dinosaurs leaving their knowledge for the mammals. Suprise ending!

Need - Did not like this one - very long and I did not get the point. Man seems to have supernatural ability to know what other people need and how to give it to them.

Nightmare Island - This is the story that inspired the cover of the book. Man is stranded on an island.

The Bones - Man invents a mind-reading device while trying to invent a new kind of radio. Hilarity ensues.

Robert Charles Wilson is now one of my top favorite authors. I read The Harvest before this one and really liked it. This book was even better. Some people have complained about not liking the ending. I don't think it could have been any better. The characters are engaging and relatable. Other complaints have been made about the way he skips between times and the viewpoints. I had no problem with this other than there was one point where I wished he had not switched to a different viewpoint because I wanted to know more about the line he was switching from right then.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, Bk 1)
Review Date: 12/20/2021

It's clearly a young adult book. I see the likeness to Harry Potter that others have mentioned. While it was OK, I'm not sure I would read any of the many sequels. Nostly read it to see if it would be OK to give to my 12-year-old granddaughter. Yes.

I haven't read this book yet, but there appears to be some confusion about this book and some the other Bradbury collections. These stories are all also in the "The Stories of Ray Bradbury". I got this one by accident. I should have been looking for "Ray Bradbury Stories: 100 of His Most Celebrated Tales". The stories in this volume are:

The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit
Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed
The Strawberry Window
A Scent of Sarsaparilla
The Picasso Summer
The Day It Rained Forever
A Medicine for Melancholy
The Shoreline at Sunset
Fever Dream
The Town Where No One Got Off
All Summer in a Day
Frost and Fire
The Anthem Sprinters
And So Died Riabouchinska
Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms in Your Cellar!
The Vacation
The Illustrated Woman
Some Live Like Lazarus
The Best of All Possible Worlds
The One Who Waits
Tyrannosaurus Rex
The Screaming Woman
The Terrible Conflagration up at the Place
Night Call, Collect
The Tombling Day
The Haunting of the New
Tomorrow's Child
I Sing the Body Electric!
The Women
The Inspiried Chicken Motel
Yes, We'll Gather at the River
Have I Got a Chocolate Bar for You!
A Story of Love
The Parrot Who Met Papa
The October Game
Punishment Without Crime
A Piece of Wood
The Blue Bottle
Long After Midnight
The Utterly Perfect Murder
The Better Part of Wisdom
Interval in Sunlight
The Black Ferris

I wish I could give this a 0 rating. I read the first 100 or so pages. It sounded like Stargate only not nearly as interesting. Then I skimmed over the next 150 or so pages - some pointless and boring fight among a bunch of aliens. Kinda like Stargate. Then I read the rest of the book. It was all rather dull and pointless. I should have taken my first urge at quitting the book.

Have you ever had the experience while reading something that it appears to be written in English (if that's your native language) but you don't understand what it means? I got that feeling while reading The Touch of Your Hand in this book. I just did not understand what was happening. Some of the other stories were just weird but I enjoyed them, especially A Crime for Llewwellyn.

I can agree with many other reviews that the book ends suddenly and leaves a lot of loose ends but I think it was a very appropriate ending to the story. I generally like time travel stories and this one ranks as one of the best I've read. I've found a picture of the timelines involved in the story and I think I will need to read it again using the chapter order suggested by this.

t was OK. Turns out that most of the stories that were good I had read before sometime.

An Infinite Summer (1976) Christopher Priest
Time travel - if you travel at one second per second

Divine Madness (1966) Roger Zelazny
Time is running backward

Manna (1949) Peter Phillips
Really a ghost story

Mugwump 4 (1959) Robert Silverberg
They're out to get us - some day

Secret Rider (1976) Marta Randall
I didn't get it, hard to read, harder to figure out what was going on

The King's Wishes (1953) Robert Sheckley
Fantasy - demons and Atlantis

The Long Remembering (1957) Poul Anderson
Travel to the distant past

The Seesaw [Weapon Shops of Isher] (1941) A. E. van Vogt
Read this one before - start of the Weapon Shops

Try and Change the Past [Change War] (1958) Fritz Leiber
Shows how hard it is to change your past

The first half of the book was OK. The stories seemed to have about the same plot and often the same or similar lines in spots. The last half was more like fantasy than science fiction. Some science fiction can take some suspension of belief but this was just too much for me.
