If you are a fan of books like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Hairstyles of the Damned, then you will enjoy this novel. Yes, it is a "young adult" novel, but it definitely a worthwhile read for the not-so-young-adult. This story is about a 14-year old socially awkward punk-like teenager, trying to find her place in school and with her family. Definitely a book one can relate to, remembering back to those awkward middle school years. Intense at times, and funny at other times, it is a quick read that kept my interest the entire time.

I decided to pick up this book because of the unbelievable hype I saw everywhere...book shelves all over the place (the train station, kiosks in the mall) and all over Amazon and various other sites. When the little blurb on the back gave little information and left much to the imagination, I was immediately intrigued...and quickly disappointed. This book really did not go anywhere. The character development was not deep enough for me, the plot went all over the place, and the book was generally depressing. I felt I had to finish it, just to see if it went anywhere...but it definitely was not as wonderful as I expected, unfortunately.

I didn't love this book, but I didn't dislike it either. It had its moments, but it also had some areas that did not peak my interest. The story of a businessman, bored with his day-to-day life who on a whim decides to write a note to his first love. After much correspondence between the two, they decide to meet up...and neither of them could have imagined the whirlwind they were in for. Much of this book is predictable, although there are a few twists and turns that throw you for a loop. Not Shreve's best book, but I think it's worth the read.

Wow...I loved this book! I have been disappointed in the past with some of Oprah's Book Club pics, but this one did NOT disappoint! What a wonderful story about determination, love, and friendship. The character development was superb...and there were so many different characters...and you grow to love them all. I definitely recommend this book. I didn't want it to end!
